About the role

Muon is seeking a Senior Manager of Electrical Engineering to join our team onsite in Mountain View, CA.  This role is responsible for leading a team of electrical engineers to deliver spacecraft electronics, including avionics, power systems, payload hardware, harnesses, and RF systems.  It is essential for this role to be filled by a technically strong individual that is also capable of contributing to the design effort.  The role will report to the Senior Director of Hardware. 

Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership: Provide hands-on technical expertise in the design, build, and test of electrical systems for cutting-edge remote sensing LEO spacecraft.
  • Establish best practices to ensure consistent & reliable designs.  Provide detailed feedback during design reviews.
  • Team Management: Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of electrical engineers, ensuring consistency across designs.  
  • Enable and assist team members to grow in their roles.  Additionally, plan team resource needs and hire new members as appropriate.
  • System Architecture: Collaborate with other engineering leads to define & iterate on a flexible system architecture that enables quick adaptation to new missions and use cases.
  • Collaboration: Work cross-functionally with mechanical, software, systems and production teams to optimize satellite designs for performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Project Execution: Oversee project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure timely delivery of mission-critical systems.
  • Individual Contributions: Be able to directly contribute to new designs, schematics, and layouts to fill gaps in resourcing and assist the team in the on-time delivery of new hardware.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience with designing complex, high reliability systems that operate in harsh environments (autonomous vehicles, drones, spacecraft, etc.)
  • 3+ years directly or indirectly managing engineering teams
  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or related field
  • Excellent leadership, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
  • Proven experience managing complex engineering projects from concept to deployment
  • Ability to rapidly change roles/responsibilities while working in a high-paced, rewarding work environment with new challenges each week
  • Accomplished at schematic capture and layout using an electronics design suite (e.g. Altium, Cadence/Orcad, etc)

Nice-to-have Skills

  • Experience in the satellite industry, aviation, military, or other high-reliability devices in challenging operating environments (e.g. vibration, thermal, vacuum, ESD)
  • Experience with designing radiation tolerant electronics using COTS components
  • Real-time embedded firmware experience in C/C++ or other similar environments
  • Experience with risk management systems and matching risk tolerance to design requirements
  • Process and test automation using scripting languages like Python

Salary

  • The salary range for this role is $163K - $228K and will depend on a candidate's skills, geographic location, qualifications, and experience as defined during the interview process.
