What if every home could effortlessly switch to cheaper, greener energy? That’s the vision behind Jane Energy. Jane is an energy robo-advisor that optimizes customers’ energy plans based on their goals and streamlines access to rebates – unlocking cheaper, greener energy for customers and accelerating the adoption of critical energy programs.
Jane is founded by Elaine Wang and Karim El-Hajj, MIT and HBS grads, previously heads of Biz Ops & Analytics and lead Product Managers managing a team of 10 engineers and analysts, and helped scale the PropTech startup Sonder from Seed to a $3B valuation and going public.
Backed by Pale Blue Dot and fresh off our pre-seed round, we’re now hiring our first engineer to scale Jane. Join us on our mission to accelerate a clean energy transition, and make it incredibly easy for homes to access cheaper, greener energy.
We’re hiring a full-stack software engineer to join our founding team and help us bring Jane’s vision to life. We’re looking for a teammate who’s product- and customer-obsessed, someone who deeply cares about why we’re building as much as what we’re building. You’ll collaborate directly with the founders to understand customer needs, co-create our product roadmap, make key technical decisions, and own features end-to-end, from ideation to deployment. If you’re excited to build from scratch, move fast, learn from users, and iterate toward product-market fit, this is the role for you.
As our founding engineer, you’ll have the opportunity to start with a blank slate to architect and build Jane V1; shape our engineering culture, tools, and best practices; drive the technical roadmap alongside the founding team; and play a key role in defining Jane’s success and long-term vision.
Work with founders to scope features and align product roadmap with key goals & strategy
Own features end-to-end, writing clean, reliable, flexible code to ship quickly and iterate
Develop user signup flows, enabling profile creation and integration with utility accounts
Build integrations with utilities and/or third-party APIs to access utility account details
Create integrations with energy providers to sync and monitor pricing data
Implement algorithms to optimize robo-advisor and model impact on energy cost and usage
Build intuitive user-facing web apps for customers and energy partners
Help build the tech team as we scale, shape engineering best practices and company culture
5–7 years of SWE experience, with a strong track record in early-stage, high-growth startups
Currently a full-stack engineer using TypeScript / JavaScript and React
Experience with RESTful APIs and integrating 3rd party tools into web apps
Writes clean, reliable, flexible code, balancing quality with speed to ship quickly and iterate
An ability to turn business and product ideas into engineering solutions
Passionate about impactful tech, especially for driving progress in climate and energy
Ownership mindset: low-ego, optimistic, self-driven, and adaptable to what’s most critical
Excited to build from the ground up as a core member of the founding team
We’ve built so far using no-code, scrappy tools to move quickly. As our founding engineer, you’ll lead decisions about our stack from scratch. Based on our experience, we envision Node/GraphQL/Postgres (backend); AWS/GCP/Docker (infra); React/TypeScript (frontend); and Jest/CircleCI (testing and CI/CD).
We’re based in NYC and are excited to co-create our team and company culture together. As part of our early founding team, this position will be in-person at our co-working space in Williamsburg, with flexibility for work-from-home days (e.g., WFH Wednesdays) and remote periods around holidays.
We offer a competitive salary aligned with early-stage NYC-based software engineering roles, plus equity with room to grow. And in terms of growth opportunities, we’re looking for someone who can grow alongside Jane and expand their role and responsibilities over time, ideal for someone who wants to grow in their careers.
Karim El-Hajj (CEO) joined Sonder as employee #12 and helped scale it from Seed to a $3B valuation and going public. In his time at Sonder, he was right-hand to the CFO and the acting head of Biz Ops & Analytics where he led the strategy, tech, and culture to make Sonder a data-driven company. After Sonder, he went to HBS for his MBA and soon reconnected with Elaine to start building Jane.
Elaine Wang (CPO) has a background in urban science and city planning. Prior to MIT, she was a Product Manager at Sonder for 4 years (joined around Series B until going public), where she led the strategy and roadmap for all analytics/data products and managed a team of 10 analysts and engineers. Before Sonder, she worked for a variety of startups and planning groups that include Frolic, the NYC Department of City Planning, and others.
Prior to Jane, we worked together for 4 years, founded a small ed-tech venture called Sqool, and co-led teams of analysts and engineers. We’re passionate about building high-performing, tight-knit teams that love working together to solve critical and technically interesting challenges.
If you’re interested in joining the team, reach out directly to us at karim@jane.energy and elaine@jane.energy! We’ll set up a first call to get to know you better, share a bit more about Jane, the role, and our product roadmap vision for the next 6-12-24 months.
