Process specimens for veterinary pathogen isolation
Using appropriate diagnostic microbiology methods, Identify bacterial pathogens from diagnostic specimens from veterinary samples.
As needed, update appropriate methods to identify veterinary pathogens from specimens by phenotypic and other methods. Anaerobic microbiology may be required in some cases
Conduct bacterial plate counts, using existing methods and in some cases update or modify these methods according to study needs.
Evaluate existing methods, and as appropriate develop or modify methods for bacterial enumeration and identification from study samples
Review microbiological methods in draft protocols and provide feedback to research study director to assure microbiology methods used in protocol are appropriate to study goals.
Prepare live bacterial cultures in replicate that meet research study specifications, according to study timing. Apply existing lab methods and in some cases develop or modify methods to produce replicate, reproducible cultures of bacteria to be used in bacterial vaccine development and research
Prepare sterile bacteriological growth media
Data entry, verification and handling, record keeping, in accordance with study protocol and applicable Standard Operating Procedures.
Anticipate study supply needs and assure stock laboratory supplies to enable timely conduct of microbiological support of studies (usually more than one study is ongoing: studies, or processing of samples from different studies will be overlapping) according to project timelines. Assure laboratory supplies are in place to support diagnostic microbiology support for specimens from animals on farm.
