Chemical Technician (Overnight Shift)

GFL Ottawa is looking for chemical technicians to support our liquid waste processing facility on the overnight shift.

 

Key Responsibilities:

• Receive all client waste – both bulk liquids/solids and containerized.
• Ensure waste is processed in a timely and safe manner.
• Prepare shipments of hazardous and non-hazardous waste for transport.
• Ensure incoming waste conforms with acceptance protocol.
• Take samples from waste vehicles and containers for lab analysis.
• Load and unload waste vehicles including vacuum trucks, tankers, straight trucks, and van trailers.
• Operate plant machinery including pumps and material handling equipment.
• Ensure safe operation and procedures are always followed.
• Complete paperwork properly & ensure it is submitted.
• Complete job hazard risk assessments
• Ensure superior customer service is provided.
• Notify the Shift Supervisor/Site Manager of any defects, damages, mistakes, errors, contamination, spills, other incidents, or accidents that are identified.
• Attend Household Hazardous Waste collection events, on the weekends during seasonal months, to identify, classify, and separate waste.
• Other tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies:

• Post-Secondary education in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering/Technology or Internship in a related field.
• Must be available for overnight shift.
• **Must be clean shaven** in order to wear a respirator.
• Familiarity with waste management regulations, Ontario regulation 347, Transportation of Dangerous Goods is an asset.
• Previous hazardous and non-hazardous waste management experience is an asset.
• Must be comfortable working in a mostly outdoor environment.
• Ability to lift upwards of 50 lbs.
