Project Director (Construction) – Red Sands BESS Projects – Groblershoop, Northern Cape

We are recruiting a Project Director to join the Red Sands - BESS Project close to Groblershoop. This 153MW/712MWh battery energy project includes the construction of battery platforms for a new Eskom Main Transformer Station, overhead lines and a Switching Station.

Responsible for the successful delivery of a large, multi-million dollar battery storage project in the Northern Cape. This role will assess and manage the risks associated with delivering within time and on budget through a FIDIC managed EPC contract. Previous experience in managing similar projects for the owner is essential. Experience in building teams and developing the project scope, charter and reporting mechanisms, together with managing risks and overseeing the project drawdowns. Understanding of international DFI funding ESG rules and regulations is essential.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead the construction phase of the BESS Project, ensuring delivery on time, within scope, and on budget, with a focus on strategic foresight and risk management
• Build and guide a high-performance team, ensuring all stakeholders—from internal staff to contractors—work seamlessly to meet project goals
• Serve as the primary point of contact for Owners, Lenders, regulators, and stakeholders, managing expectations and aligning the project with long-term strategic goals
• Oversee the commercial and technical aspects, ensuring EPC contractor compliance and proactively managing risks and challenges before they arise
• Resolve scheduling conflicts and ensure milestone delivery by planning for potential issues
• Implement and enforce quality control standards across the project lifecycle, ensuring compliance and maintaining high technical standards
• Proactively identify and address financial, regulatory, and logistical risks
• Control project finances, manage drawdowns, and payments, and forecast future financial needs
• Champion HSESS (Health, Safety, Environmental, and Social Sustainability) standards, ensuring a safe work environment throughout the project
• Manage the transition from construction to operations, ensuring smooth handover with all systems tested and commissioned
