Job Description

Gridium’s mission is to hasten the transition to a low-carbon economy. Our software helps people run commercial buildings better, at lower cost and with less energy. Gridium is looking for a backend engineer to help us bring deep efficiency to the built environment, which is responsible for 40% of the world’s energy use.

Gridium’s software platform collects large amounts of operational data from commercial buildings such as offices, medical providers, and corporate campuses. Our analytics then identifies energy savings opportunities that we work with customers to bring to reality.

Your role

We are looking for a US-based DevOps engineer with strong AWS experience. Our stack lives on AWS and runs on Docker containers; it includes a multi-terabyte Aurora Postgres database, two AWS Batch stacks that process tens of thousands of jobs daily, and an assortment of EC2s and associated infrastructure to support several SaaS applications.

You will own our AWS infrastructure: maintain and optimize our existing systems, choose and implement new tools and technologies, and write tools and integrations to make the engineering team more efficient. We are a small team, and you should be a generalist. You will be responsible for improving monitoring and observability with Datadog, keeping our CircleCI builds flowing, and maintaining and scaling our Elasticsearch instances. You should also expect to respond to security reviews, implement least privilege access controls, and work with the engineering team to implement security best practices.

Requirements

Candidates must currently reside in the United States and have the legal right to work in the United States.

You should be self-directed, responsible, and committed to building efficient, well-documented, and secure systems. You should be comfortable analyzing product requirements to produce technical specifications that go beyond coding to cover testing, monitoring, and future maintainability. We need a problem solver who can ask good questions and collaborate effectively with teammates.

  • Do you have at least 5 years of experience working with AWS and relational databases?
  • Have you demonstrated English writing skills in artifacts such as run books, technical specifications, or similar?
  • Can you effectively balance building systems for the long term and getting new features out quickly?
  • Do you enjoy diving deep into complex systems to understand how they work and make them better?
  • Have you applied infrastructure as code principles to an existing system?
  • Do you want to truly own the systems you work on?
  • Do you enjoy working in an all-remote environment?
  • Are you comfortable writing clean, maintainable Python code?
  • Are you interested in working on a wide variety of backend tasks, in both feature development and DevOps areas?

If so, Gridium may be the place for you.

About Gridium

Gridium is a venture-backed SaaS application provider with a mission to bring cost-effective energy savings to commercial real estate. We have been delivering deep energy savings to our customers for ten years, and we are now growing faster than ever due to increasing demand for real energy solutions.

We have been an all-remote company since our founding, and we love the fact that remote work gives us flexibility to balance our roles as employees, parents, family members, or however else we round out our time. Remote work allows us to find great people wherever they happen to be, and it allows you to structure your day with minimal interruption so that you can get stuff done in the style that makes most sense for you.

Of course, spending time face-to-face is important, so every three months we pick a city and meet up for several days of highly productive and highly fun planning and doing. Past trips include Chicago, Austin, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, New Orleans, and more. Although we switched to remote versions of these meet-ups during the pandemic, we have been excited to have the opportunity to start meeting face to face again. Please note that we do require all employees to be vaccinated against Covid.

We have a casual, collaborative work environment where everyone’s ideas matter. Since creative, enthusiastic employees are the basis for our success, we take great care and pride in how we attract, hire, and support our employees.

And of course

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Benefits

The position comes with salary, stock options, 401(k) match, a great health plan, vision, dental, generous parental leave, and a flexible vacation policy — we want you to take the time off you need so that you are happy and productive.
