Manager, Prototype Engineering (Fab/Chem)

Twelve is seeking a Sr. Prototyping Engineer to lead a team of engineers and technicians supporting solutions for our materials synthesis, membrane fabrication, and characterization groups. The team is responsible for 1) selecting, installing, and commissioning new equipment to improve Twelve’s materials synthesis and fabrication infrastructure, 2) developing and prototyping new processes, characterization equipment, and characterization methods, and 3) maintaining existing infrastructure. In this role, you will work closely with other groups across Twelve’s technical team, leveraging a broad engineering background to develop new solutions.

This is a full time role based in Berkeley, CA

What you’ll do

• Collaborate with R&D teams at Twelve to identify engineering needs and opportunities.
• Lead and mentor a team of engineers and technicians.
• Design and build equipment and instrumentation for fabricating the materials that go into Twelve’s electrolyzers.
• Prototype and refine hardware to prove-out and validate new characterization techniques and test methodologies.
• Automate data acquisition, storage, and analysis.
• Document operating procedures and bill of materials for ongoing projects.
• Prepare presentations and report on progress at meetings.
• Design and implement systems and equipment to scale-up existing processes.

Who you are

• You have a degree in a STEM field or equivalent experience.
• You have hands-on experience designing and building hardware/scientific equipment.
• You have experience leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams
• Experience working with researchers/scientists in an engineering capacity.
• Experience building integrated systems that include controls and data acquisition
• You have experience prototyping across several disciplines of engineering, such as through prior work experience, senior-design projects, internships, or hobby projects, and can demonstrate at least 4 of the following:

• Diverse understanding of analytical laboratory techniques, equipment, and principle (e.g. UV-Vis spectroscopy, gas chromatography, DSC, TGA, advanced microscopy, Instron/DMA/TMA, etc.)
• Experience with chemical processes and equipment (e.g. reactors, distillation, etc.)
• CAD experience (especially design and fabrication of custom parts).
• Mechatronics experience.
• Experience with data acquisition systems and/or PLCs.
• Experience with vacuum equipment.

• Electronics experience specifying and installing sensors with different interfaces such as analog current and voltage signals as well as digital communication.
• Familiarity with electrochemical systems like fuel cells, batteries, electrolyzers, etc. and relevant characterization equipment like potentiostats.
• Experience working with compressed gasses
• Knowledge of environmental and safety regulations, especially pertaining to toxic and flammable gasses
