The Role:

The Sensor Fleet Manager position at Sofar will own the full lifecycle of our global oceanic sensor network - from deploying new sensors around the world by working with Sofar’s Ocean Science team and vessel partner groups, to monitoring the existing fleet for quality control and data analysis, to end of life procedures and buoy recovery. This is a new position within Sofar and will have the ability to shape and define critical processes and functions and drive immense value with one of Sofar’s key assets.

Some of the critical responsibilities include:

  • Identify, onboard, and manage the relationship between Sofar and Ship of Opportunity partner groups and their vessels.
  • Perform regular monitoring of the Sofar global sensor grid to identify malperforming assets, new areas of deployment opportunity, network maintenance requirements, and other data analysis on an ongoing basis.
  • Coordinate the logistics for timely shipment, customs clearance, vessel loading, and briefing captain and crew on proper deployment procedures. 
  • Work with Sofar’s telemetry providers to manage data subscriptions and negotiate the best possible terms for Sofar’s continued growth and rapidly evolving sensor platform.
  • Manage Sofar’s recovery program by monitoring for sensors reaching their end of life, and coordinating recovery efforts using local partner groups. 
  • Establish record keeping and developing reporting and analytics protocols to track deployments, network performance, costs, and other areas of interest, and provide briefings and other insights to Sofar’s key leadership. 

About You

  • BA/BS in ocean science, engineering, ecology, or a related field
  • 3+ years of professional experience
  • Experience managing international shipping logistics, including managing timelines, negotiating with carriers, coordinating customs clearance, and ensuring proper delivery to the final destination. 
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal), flexibility, and comfort with change
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail, with a strong analytical capacity.
  • Ability to interact and interface confidently with all levels of management and external stakeholders.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
