Role DescriptionThe Head of Data Science will be responsible for leading the Data Science function for our rapidly growing company. S/he will be responsible for setting and driving the strategic vision, growing the team, and developing a world-class data science and machine learning organization. 
Data is at the heart of our business and strategy to reinvent trucking. We evaluate billions of load combinations to determine the ideal way to combine shipments while balancing for dynamic issues that impact our customers in real time - weather, traffic, breakdowns, varying hours of service, and unpredictable loading times. We use data science and machine learning to automatically adjust for changing conditions and unforeseen events to maximize efficiency and prevent waste. Convoy was designed to be a truly data science-driven organization; machine learning, economic analysis, experimentation, causal inference, and optimization underpin every decision we make.
This role will partner with other executive leaders to leverage data science, analytics and machine learning as a strategic differentiator for the business - collaborating with product, design and engineering teams to in the creation of new products, in addition to working across the organization to support to a variety of business and technical problems. 

You will:

• Set the data science vision for Convoy, and build the roadmap to drive business results. 
• Be a thought leader for the design and development of our data, and machine learning platforms, driving capability around tooling that enables enterprise-wide analysis. 
• Guide the development of the data science organization; recruit, hire, and train a world class team of data scientists, economists, researchers, machine learning engineers, business analysts, etc. to solve business critical problems across the company. 
• Partner with other executive leaders and work cross-functionally with product, design, and engineering to strategically leverage data science capabilities and apply your team’s skills/knowledge to our most pressing strategic problems.
•  Lead the team’s efforts to solve economic/business problems such as auctions and mechanisms, web and mobile applications, operational tools, carrier onboarding, compliance and risk, real time pricing, forecasting, real time routing, network optimization, batching, sustainability (reducing empty miles in real time), matching, trip and asset optimization, in addition to many more. 
• Evangelize the data science and research function within Convoy and foster a strong data science community.

We're looking for someone with:

• 5+ years building and leading a data science function, with experience leading through growth.
• 10+ years of previous experience in a hands-on data science, science, or research role.
• Strong business acumen. Brings commercial and business orientation, with a track record of leveraging data science to identify trends, formulate business insights, and develop actionable solutions to solve critical business, customer, and organizational problems.
• Ability to break down high-level business problems into concrete solutions.
• Excellent communicator that can bridge between a wide range of stakeholders (technical and non-technical); proven ability to develop strong partnerships with internal and cross-functional peers, with a specific history partnering successfully with product and engineering teams. 
• Ability to apply prior experience to our opportunity space; experience in a start-up, high growth environment, or marketplace business with unique and varied customer needs is a plus. 
• Academic/Research foundations - MS or PhD preferred. Foundation in Mathematics, Economics/Econometrics, Statistics, Computer Science, Operations Research, or related field.
