Job Description

The Company

Sofar is on a mission to connect the world’s oceans. We design, build, and deploy the largest privately owned network of marine weather sensors to power the world’s best marine weather forecasts. Our data helps our customers to increase efficiency and reduce emissions, delivering tools to governments and other stakeholders to understand impacts of climate change on extreme weather and ocean health. We live on Planet Ocean, and our goal is to create the ocean intelligence needed to ensure a sustainable future.

The Position

We’re searching for an experienced IT Technician that is excited about working in a startup environment as we work to better understand the world’s oceans. With the company’s success we will be moving into a new office space and doubling in headcount by the end of the year. This role will be integral to ensuring our company stays on top of technical best practices, successfully onboards new employees, and allows existing team members to work with minimal technical issues.

The IT Technician will be expected to work onsite along our Engineers, Ocean Scientist, and Manufacturing teams. You will be working closely with both our Workplace and People teams while also interacting regularly with company leadership. We expect someone to feel comfortable talking to people at all levels of the organization and to bring a passion for support that encourages team members to reach out when they face issues. This is primarily an Apple environment so we expect someone coming in to be comfortable with all things Mac and up to date on the latest Apple products.

Some projects you’ll be a part of:

  • Assistance with the successful transition and set up of a new office space
  • Onboarding of new team members as the company doubles in size

  • Set up of conference rooms and technically sound work stations
  • Training of new and existing employees on IT best practices and device usage
  • Provide ongoing support for both in-person and remote employees through regular office hours as well as on an as-needed basis
  • Management of office networking (routers, switches, servers, etc)
  • Creation, documentation, and enforcement of security and IT policies
  • Purchase and configure new devices, about 80% of which are Apple products
  • Selection and integration of a Mobile Device Management tool
  • Maintenance of internal tools such as Google Workplace and implementation of new tools
  • Management of software licensing agreements in collaboration with other teams

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, a related field, multiple IT certifications (CompTIA Net+, etc)
  • Experience leading IT support for a fast-growing startup
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve multiple issues
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Comfortable in a diverse and fast-paced environment
  • Experience with Google Workplace, Apple Business Manager, and other SaaS tools
  • Proficiency in macOS management at an enterprise level
  • Experience working with network and server management support
  • Up-to-date knowledge of new systems, information, software, and upgrades
  • Ability to physically stand, bend, squat, and lift equipment
  • Passionate about building a product with a positive impact on the world

Bonus Points

  • Experience working in or around a marine environment
  • Experience with CAD, laser cutters, and other hardware systems
