Job Description

Location: Flexible in the UK

The OVO Group’s purpose is to drive progress towards net zero carbon living. To reach Plan Zero, we need everyone to come together - not just as customers buying energy, but as members with a common goal. As part of this ambitious plan, our goal is to become the ‘Leading Employer in the UK’ by 2030. If you think you could be the talent we’re looking for, then come and join the adventure!

We launched in 2009 with a mission to change energy for the better. Since then, we’ve welcomed over a million members, planted a million trees, and set our sights on helping save the planet.

As a Group, we’re working to become a net zero carbon business by 2030, while helping our OVO Energy members halve their carbon footprints at the same time.

Green energy and technology are great tools to fight the climate crisis with. But it’s people power that will rewrite history.

So we’re building a zero carbon team inside and out. Of people who share our values, feel inspired by our mission, and want to make change happen. When you work for OVO, it’s not just a job. It’s the work of a lifetime. And we want the sharpest minds to help.

Up for the challenge?

Where in the world of OVO will I be working?

As part of the Trading function, this role will report into the Energy Risk Manager.  This is an exciting role that is key to the team developing, implementing and reporting on effective Hedging Strategies.  With annual wholesale costs in excess of £1.5bn per annum, it is critical that our Trading Activities are effectively managed and monitored and that we have robust systems and business processes in place to achieve this.

OVO’s Trading function is a dynamic and fast paced environment.  This will give you the opportunity to build relationships across all areas of the business and to help to ensure that key internal partners have a clear understanding of the opportunities and risks associated with Wholesale Energy Trading.

What will I be doing?

You'll be helping the team develop business systems and processes associated with monitoring and reporting of our wholesale energy positions and exposures, including our third party provided ETRM (Energy Trading and Risk Management) software.

You'll contribute to the development and assessment of hedging strategies to manage wholesale market risk in the business.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring Trading activities to ensure that they remain fully aligned with the agreed Trading Risk Policy
  • Implementing effective technique controls for Trading activities to mitigate the risk of financial loss.
  • Use your knowledge of analytical and statistical methods to develop models to assess and report on wholesale market risk.
  • Proactively identify and implement improvements to risk assessment methodologies, engaging with external partners and industry specialists.
  • Developing reporting on wholesale energy trading activities including the measurement and reporting of Brand Wholesale Costs and Trading profit or loss.
  • Ensuring that all assumptions used to calculate wholesale energy requirements are agreed with partners, are reviewed and updated regularly and are accurately reflected in trading forecasts
  • Monitoring industry credit cover and ensuring that we meet industry collateral requirements at a low cost
  • You will develop strong relationships with internal partners to consolidate information and highlight risks and opportunities

Is this the job for me?

You're a numbers person and confident in dealing with large data sets and extracting key insight & results.

You will need the ability to learn quickly in order to develop a detailed understanding of current models and processes. You take initiative in addressing complex challenges and experience in the energy market, even better if it's within the wholesale energy trading environment.

You're a great teammate who thrives in a challenging environment; you're comfortable working both autonomously and with colleagues to deliver value in a small, high-functioning team.

Ideally you will have…

  • Strong analytical data manipulation skills and advanced Excel knowledge.
  • Experience with writing SQL queries
  • Demonstrable high attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to break down complex problems, often involving large amounts of data.
  • Flexibility; willing to contribute on a range of work aspects.
  • Experience in energy trading risk management
  • Experience in data visualisation tools (eg Tableau)
  • Experience with data analysis in a programming language (eg. Python or R)

From us you'll get brilliant benefits for a world-changing team

Our people are at the heart of Plan Zero. That’s why we offer plenty of green benefits and progressive policies to make you feel at home.

For starters, you’ll get 34 days of holiday (including bank holidays).

Then there’s Flex Pay. It’s an extra 9% of your salary on top of your core pay to use as you like. You can take it as cash, add to your pension, or choose to spend it on a huge range of flex benefits.
