The Communications Engineer will work closely with Software, Hardware, Systems, and Flight Test teams to ensure the communications system meets the needs of the flight research programs. This includes enabling wireless communication for a variety of experimental aircraft and supporting requirements development for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) uncrewed aircraft operations. This position requires a solid understanding of RF communications and networking, and a willingness to learn the complex trade-offs involved in system design across both aircraft systems and ground control stations.</p><p> </p><p>The most important traits at Joby are a positive attitude toward the project, a strong work ethic, and the ability to self-manage and learn new skills.  Forward thinking and adaptability in a fast-paced environment are also a must.</p><h2>Responsibilities</h2><ul> <li>Design, implement, troubleshoot, and test aircraft and ground wireless communications systems.</li> <li>Test and evaluate vendor data links (LOS, SATCOM), and networking technologies</li> <li>Support Systems Integration and Test (SIT) planning of test procedures, test equipment/environment, and test execution at bench level as well as aircraft level.</li> <li>Support the uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) communication requirements development and verification.</li></ul><h2>Required</h2><ul> <li>Strong problem-solving skills</li> <li>Ability to work well independently and cross-functionally across the organization</li> <li>Hands-on experience with RF test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and/or vector network analyzers</li> <li>2+ years of relevant industry experience, BS in relevant discipline</li></ul><p><strong>This position must meet US export control compliance requirements, therefore a candidate must qualify as a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15. “US Person” includes US Citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees.</strong></p><h2>Desired</h2><ul> <li>Experience with aircraft RF systems design considerations (antenna/cable performance, EMI/EMC, link budget analysis, etc.) </li> <li>Understanding of networking protocols (e.g., TCP/IP), routing, and network security practices (e.g., VPNs)</li> <li>Familiarity with radio communications in the National Airspace System (NAS)</li> <li>Proficient with Python and/or C++</li> <li>5+ years of relevant industry experience, MS in relevant discipline</li></ul><p> </p><p>Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target pay rate for this position is $95,800 - $127,700/yr.
