Job Summary
The Principal Engineer for Climate and Wildfire Resiliency will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing utility system resiliency plans to address wildfire risks and the impacts of climate change. This senior-level position will focus on establishing and maintaining engineering standards and designing electric utility system plans to mitigate the effects of climate change and wildfire risk. The Principal Engineer will serve as the technical subject matter expert on engineering standards to mitigate these risks. They will work closely with the Emergency Management Department and the Principal Advisor for Climate and Wildfire Mitigation.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement comprehensive utility system resiliency plans with a focus on wildfire risk and climate change.
Establish and maintain engineering standards to enhance the resiliency of electric utility infrastructure.
Serve as the subject matter expert on engineering standards to mitigate wildfire risks and climate change impacts.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and assess risks related to climate change and wildfire risk.
Lead the development of electric utility system plans to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Conduct risk assessments and develop strategies to minimize the impact of potential hazards.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of resiliency plans and make necessary adjustments.
Stay current with industry best practices and regulatory requirements related to wildfire risk and climate change mitigation.
Provide technical guidance and support to other departments within Avangrid.
Prepare and present reports to senior management and stakeholders on resiliency strategies and progress.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in resiliency planning, risk assessment, or a related field within the utility industry.
Strong knowledge of engineering standards and practices related to electric utility infrastructure.
Experience in developing and implementing resiliency plans for utilities.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry best practices related to wildfire risk and climate change mitigation.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification.
Experience with GIS and other mapping tools.
Familiarity with climate modeling and forecasting tools.
Experience in stakeholder engagement and public communication.
