SUMMARY

The Utility Scale Interconnection Manager is responsible for managing utility scale projects through the interconnection process as well as providing technical expertise in the interconnection of distributed energy resources (DERs).  This role requires an electrical engineer with experience in power systems and in-depth understanding of interconnection processes and standards for ISO/RTOs. This position reports to the Manager, Grid Integration Engineering and will work closely with the Electrical Engineering, Design Engineering, Construction and Utility-Scale Business Development teams to achieve interconnection of utility-scale PV and Energy Storage projects in MISO, PJM, ISO NE, NYISO and ERCOT

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review and analyze interconnection studies and manage a portfolio of utility-scale interconnection applications from initial submission through closeout.
  • Develop preliminary project designs and application packages to initiate interconnection requests and negotiate with utilities to optimize the interconnection design.
  • Manage the electrical design and interconnection application process for utility-scale projects, identify reliability and congestion constraints for FERC jurisdictional projects and develop integrated solutions
  • Analyze interconnection due diligence materials to support project acquisition efforts, identify existing and potential red flags
  • Lead and manage Nexamp’s load flow studies and ISO/RTO system modelling, as well as supporting commercial LMP and price modelling
  • Create and validate benchmark and dynamic models for utility scale projects.
  • Manage external consultants performing injection analysis and transmission studies as well as curtailment and congestion analyses
  • Represent the Grid Integration Engineering group in design reviews and serve as subject matter expert for utility and ISO/RTO requirements, medium-voltage design, and high-voltage design
  • Represent Nexamp as the technical lead with ISO/RTOs, lead biweekly utility status calls, maintain utility relationships, and manage utility performance to tariff deadlines
  • Lead technical utility negotiations and drive implementation of non-wires alternatives, selective curtailment, and other grid-edge technologies
  • Interface daily with internal business development and engineering teams to coordinate project workflow
  • Develop tools to automate or expedite study processes and evaluate strategies for curtailment and project optimization
  • Provide technical support to Nexamp development, EPC, and O&M departments for the entire life cycle of a project including development, permitting, construction, and asset management phases.
  • Perform site visits for project assessment and feasibility

QUALIFICATIONS

Ideal candidate must be enthusiastic, self-motivated, results-oriented, and operate well in a collaborative, team-oriented environment. 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering required
  • 5+ years of power engineering, transmission planning, or interconnection experience required
  • 2+ years of experience in utility-scale PV/PV+ESS interconnection required
  • Strong knowledge of electrical principles, including medium and high voltage distribution, protection system coordination and relaying principles required
  • EIT certification required, PE license preferred
  • Transmission power flow modelling in PSS/E, Aspen, PSCAD, or equivalent software experience required
  • Knowledge of ISO/RTO transmission planning standards and interconnection requirements as well as FERC jurisdictional experience is preferred
  • Experience with substation design and transmission-level power system protection and coordination is preferred
  • AutoCAD software proficiency preferred
  • Strong knowledge of industry standard design codes such as National Electric Code, International Building Code, International Fire Code and other industry standards
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% for site visits and utility meetings
  • Valid Driver’s License required
