Remote Sensing group is one of the pillars of Indigo Software Platform responsible for learning everything about the fields and agronomic events at the farm using satellite imagery , machine learning and data science.

As the Director of Engineering  on the Remote Sensing Group at Indigo, you collaborate closely with other team leaders, driving a strong understanding of system interactions, reliability, and scalability. As the technical engineering team lead, you will be instrumental in evangelizing modern software engineering practices, mentoring others, and growing the team. This is a high-impact role that will address extremely complex systems that will grow in scope with the team. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Operationalize the processing of the data in Remote Sensing
  • Through the combination of building the Engineering squads and embedding software developers in data sciences squads build high performance engineering in Remote Sensing 
  • Implement Indigo software development practices and tech stack  in Remote Sensing 
  • Mentor more junior team members, shaping their thought processes to find solutions
  • Collaborate with People Team to shape hiring strategy and grow the team
  • Scale existing systems, with a strong focus on reliability, security, performance, and cost
  • Evangelize modern software engineering practices, mentoring team on these practices and incorporating them into systems approaches
  • Research, propose, and begin implementing (as applicable) new technologies or software patterns to make improvements

Competencies:

  • Experience productizing and operationalizing production of large remotely sensed, geospatial datasets for agriculture or anything else 
  • Expert knowledge of building scalable API/Services and data pipelines serving Geoсpatial and remotely sensed data  in cloud environment
  • Understands how to approach super-large, complex systems, given only high-level requirements and use cases
  • Able to discuss advantages and disadvantages of various solutions (ex. microservices vs. monoliths, mon vs. shared repos, etc.). Understands the importance of using standard  techstacks 
  • Strong mentoring capability; leads by example
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Proactive and self-directed; drives team focus and strategy

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years experience; proven success delivering software at an enterprise scale
  • Demonstrable experience of closely working with Data Scientists 
  • Strong track record as a technical lead and mentor
  • Experience cultivating talent and hiring Engineers
  • Proven experience leading the from-scratch technology selection process
  • Proven experience in a growth environment
  • Strong experience working in AWS
