Principal or Sr. Staff Research Scientist, Software Quality & Performance

Digital Systems department at NIO is responsible for building highly reliable, secure, and scalable infrastructure and platforms for intelligent and fully autonomous driving vehicles, and its scope ranges from vehicle operating system software platform, central computer and SOA-based digital architecture, automation simulation test platforms, cyber security, vehicle cloud & connectivity.
A primary mission of Digital Systems North America R&D Center is to lead the research and development of industry-leading digital technologies for autonomous driving vehicles. This is an opportunity to solve a wide range of technical challenges, such as building a high-performance & secure OS based on microkernel architecture, deeply customized Linux and in-house hypervisor for automobile-grade safety, seamless app development on heterogeneous hardware chipsets, low-latency and high throughput data processing, powerful AI framework, and complete tool chains to supply Android-like development experiences.
We are looking for experienced researchers with deep expertise in software quality & performance technologies to help NIO create technical breakthroughs and innovations in these areas.

Responsibilities:

• Lead advanced research in the software quality & performance domain. Create innovative solutions to fundamental technical problems and make technical breakthroughs that improve software quality and performance of NIO products
• Closely follow technology trends in the industry and academia, and study competitors’ technical stacks. Help the company define a long-term technical strategy and roadmap about software quality & performance
• Build strong partnership with different engineering teams to understand their business needs and challenges, and develop innovative yet practical solutions to solve their problems
• Build Proof-of-Concept to validate and evaluate ideas or designs, and work closely with engineering teams to bring developed technologies to real products
• Provide thought leadership, train and mentor other engineers
• Build collaboration with top universities and lead joint research projects with university research labs.

Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience of doing advanced research for creating or advancing software quality & performance improvement technologies.
• 15+ years of experience in Research & Development, designing and building complex software systems.
• In-depth expertise in program analysis, bug detection, and development tools
• Strong capability of identifying pain points in the real world and developing practical solutions.
• Proven track of records of developing break-through technologies that solve real-world problems and converting research ideas to real products.
• Excellent communication skills, and technical writing proficiency.
• Goal-driven with CAN-DO mindset. Passionate about EV and smart vehicle technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.
• Experience of designing and building large-scale and highly efficient tools that can detect hard-to-spot software bugs or performance issues.
• Familiar with embedded software, and comfortable with hardware.
• Familiar with automotive, aerospace, medical or other safety critical applications.
• Experience in working with top research groups in universities, and leading industry-academia joint projects.
