Job Description: 

We are seeking an experienced Researcher to develop our metabolite analysis capabilities as part of our Strain Analytics team.  Our team supports strain development from Discovery through Manufacturing. In this role you will provide analytical support by performing LC characterization of microbial fermentations and formulations, assist in measuring the growth & viability of our microbes, and work on other chemical or biological assays to phenotype our strains.

This position may require occasional travel between our Berkeley, CA and Hayward, CA research facilities.  

Location: Split between our Berkeley, CA and Hayward, CA research facilities.

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop, optimize, validate, and deploy analytical methods for metabolite analysis to meet the needs of our rapidly growing microbial pipeline.  
  • Organize and communicate analytical data from external vendors 
  • Execute testing of routine sample submission.  QC data, troubleshoot samples & methods and analyze results.  
  • Actively seek out new technologies to further our research pipeline.  
  • Management of analytical samples to and from Pivot labs, CROs and CMOs.   
  • QC, analyze and communicate your data in written reports and at team meetings. 
  • Communicate effectively and coordinate resources within and across teams. 
  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and laboratory notebook. 
  • Participate in quality improvement efforts. 
  • Strive to achieve excellent client service.

Required Skills and Experience: 

  • PhD., Master of Science and 4+ years of experience, or Bachelor of Science with 6+ years of experience, with a degree in life sciences, biological systems engineering, biochemical engineering, or related field. Candidates with equivalent related experience are welcome. 
  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry including liquid and gas chromatography.   
  • Analytical HPLC and GC method development for small molecule analysis. NIR experience is a plus.  
  • At least four years’ experience in a fast-paced research lab environment. 
  • Proven ability to manage deadlines and multiple ongoing multi-day workflows. 
  • Following and writing Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) documents. 
  • Able to perform physically repetitive laboratory tasks. 
  • Experience with data analysis software (JMP, Spotfire, Tableau or similar). 
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to work in both Berkeley and Hayward locations, as needed. 

Desired Skills and Experience: 

  • 2+ years’ experience working in the biotech industry. 
  • Experience with complex samples such as soil or plant tissue. 
  • Strong background in microbial biochemistry or physiology. 
  • Experience working in high-throughput (96-well) formats preferred. 
  • Experience working with laboratory liquid handling automation a plus. 
  • Experience with process development and scale-up. 
  • Experience managing and/or mentoring more junior researchers.
