About the Job

Argonne National Laboratory is searching for an Environmental Monitoring Specialist to join its Environmental Protection Program. This role supports the environmental monitoring and compliance programs to ensure Argonne maintains regulatory compliance and environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform environmental monitoring and surveillance activities as required by Argonne’s environmental permits and DOE Orders.
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for field measurements, instrument calibration, sample collection and handling, and documentation.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot environmental field equipment and remediation systems (e.g., air compressors, pumps, wells, etc.).
  • Use computers for data entry, analysis, and visualization of environmental data.
  • Assist in the preparation, review, and revision of technical reports and SOPs.
  • Support environmental compliance staff with monitoring, reporting, and regulatory deliverables.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, geology, or a related field with less than 2 years relevant work experience.
  • Basic understanding of environmental sampling, field/lab practices, and environmental regulations (e.g., Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA).
  • Working knowledge of environmental monitoring, chemistry, geology, hydrogeology, and remedial technologies. 

Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and environmental data management tools.
  • Mechanical aptitude; candidates should be comfortable working with tools, equipment, and diagnosing issues, performing basic repairs.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently while maintaining quality and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively under limited supervision.
  • Willingness to learn and cross-train in areas outside of existing expertise.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk, stand, kneel, bend at waist, and carry equipment or materials.
  • Ability to physically lift and carry up to 45 lb. for a short distance over uneven terrain.
  • Comfortable working outdoors, year-round, occasionally in inclement weather and potentially extreme conditions.
  • Must possess a valid, government-issued driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • Experience with environmental radioactivity and associated sampling.

The expected hiring range for this position is $57,764.00 - $90,112.23.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as, but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
