Job Description

About Charm
Our mission is to reverse climate change and return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert waste biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into permanent, underground storage as carbon removal, or reform the bio-oil to produce syngas for fossil-free steel.
Last year, our carbon removal pathway took off with support from customers like Stripe, Shopify & Microsoft, and we deployed our first mobile pyrolyzer. In the next 18 months, we'll build and deploy the next pyrolyzer revision, demonstrate our fossil-free syngas pilot, substantially expand our operations in the Midwest and put more than 1,000 tonnes of CO₂e underground.
We're looking to expand our team of creative and hands-on engineers, fabricators, operators, and forward-thinking humans. We value psychological safety and collaboration. We take calculated risks and don't sweep mistakes under the rug; instead, we pin them to the wall and learn from them. We value that everyone’s unique backgrounds and perspectives shape their work. We encourage you to read our company values.
Come help us reverse climate change. Gigatons or bust!
Your Responsibilities
As our Engineering Program Management lead, you will help us expand our internal bio-oil capacity through the hardware development of our pyrolyzers, a critical step in our mission to scale carbon removal and reverse climate change. This essentially means you’ll help us grow quickly by streamlining the process of how we build our actual machines. You’d excel in this role if you have a keen attention to detail, but also can zoom out and see the bigger picture. If you like collaborating cross functionally, working on technical projects in a fast pace environment and being the glue that holds it all together - this role is for you!
You will guide our R&D teams through the hardware development process through the coordination of design, build, and test cycles. You will work closely with our engineers and early manufacturing teams as we determine the best way to manufacture pyrolyzers in ever-increasing numbers. You'll help us improve and refine our schedules, manage risks, and balance shipping performance improvements while meeting production goals. You will work to identify key bottlenecks and determine ways to creatively improve and accelerate our processes. You'll also interface with our operations team to better forecast bio-oil capacity for both carbon removal and industrial gasification markets.
This role reports directly to our CTO, Kelly Kinetic, and will be a part of Charm's leadership team.

In this role, you will bring:

  • A depth of experience in program or project management in a hardware or tech company
  • Knowledge of typical hardware design, test and build processes
  • A keen eye for risks and common issues, and built-in buffer and margin accordingly
  • Experience building and managing schedules in the program of your choice
  • Experience interfacing with R&D teams on status and maturity of designs
  • A clear voice for when a task is misestimated, and work to make realistic and accurate schedules
  • A track record for building, growing and managing teams

These are not essential:

  • You've used JIRA and other collaborative task-tracking and schedule development tools.
  • You have a technical background or education.
  • You have experience interfacing with early production lines of a new R&D build.
  • You've worked with both mechanical and electrical hardware teams.
  • You've led programs from early R&D through to routine production.

You would make a great addition to the team if:
· You solve problems with creativity and curiosity · You take high ownership of your work from end-to-end· You are eager to learn and teach others · You readily challenge your assumptions when faced with a difficult problem· You collaboratively seek out teammates for feedback and advice· You care deeply about our mission & the transition to a greener, more equitable future
