Job Description

Are you ready to rise to the challenge of climate change with the team that will deliver? Form Energy is a U.S. technology and manufacturing company that is developing and commercializing pioneering energy storage technologies to enable the electric grid to run on 100% renewable energy, every day of the year.
Supported by leading investors such as Breakthrough Energy Ventures, ArcelorMittal, TPG Rise, MIT’s The Engine, and others, we share a common belief that low-cost, multi-day energy storage is the key to enable tomorrow’s zero carbon electric grid. Driven by our core values of humanity, excellence, and creativity, we are deeply motivated and inspired to create a better world. We need talented, hardworking individuals who share our goal of tackling the challenge of climate change. Do you want to work with us today to build a better tomorrow?
Role Description We are looking for Materials Engineers to join the Performance and Integration (P&I) Team. P&I works with individual component teams to assess holistic performance and assemble a high performing cell package. This is a hands-on role in which you will prepare, characterize, and test materials that will advance our understanding and optimize performance for Form’s long-duration energy storage systems. You will coordinate characterization efforts using internal instruments and cross-functional collaboration. You will work closely with materials processing and electrode development engineers to enable the transition from high performing materials to integrated full cells. This is an opportunity to have a direct and daily impact on a best-of-its-kind electrode development in an exciting energy technology startup.

What You'll Do:

  • Analyze data from various sources (electrochemical experiments, AC Impedance measurements, chemical assays, mechanical testing, etc.) to draw conclusions and drive decision making
  • Collect and interpret ex-situ characterization (i.e., SEM, EDS, ICP, XRD, BET, TGA, DSC, EDS, XRF) data on cell components at beginning and end of life
  • Collaborate with component teams to identify material failures and accelerate development
  • Identify and develop new analysis methods to gain insight into cell performance and degradation
  • Create, validate, and author standard operating procedures for new, routine characterization efforts
  • Communicate your findings within a small collaborative group of engineers

What You'll Bring:

  • BS or MS in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy or a related field
  • 2+ years experience with a lab-based materials research project or product development effort (e.g., full time industrial position, internships, academic research experiences)
  • Experience with sample preparation for various material characterization techniques
  • Ability to perform and interpret data from chemical characterization techniques (i.e., XRD, ICP, XPS, SEM, EDS, XRF)
  • Direct experience specifying experiment design, testing hypotheses, and interpreting results
  • Comfortable analyzing datasets with scientific programming languages, such as MATLAB, Python, or Mathematica preferred
  • Familiarity with common electrochemical techniques (e.g., CV, EIS, RRDE) and battery testing (constant current, constant voltage, constant power) is a plus

US work authorization is required.
