We’re looking for a Controller to direct, plan and coordinate all accounting operations for our rapidly growing organization. We’re a dynamic organization, so we need someone with superb attention to detail, drive and organizational skills to help us build a high functioning accounting team. Given that we’re in an ever-changing industry, we are looking for a Controller who is excited about building a future playbook and bringing best practices alongside. The Controller will report to our Head of Strategy. We will consider partial-remote (within driving distance to Portland, ME) for the right candidate.

You Will

  • Direct all aspects of accounting operations, set up and maintain efficient accounting processes and design the future of our financial reporting and accounting function.
  • Analyze company's financial results with respect to profits, trends, costs and compliance with budgets. Issue regular status and ad hoc reports to senior management.
  • Be proactive in analysis of past and future financial performance, anticipating new process requirements and new accounting processes we may need to implement. Assist in the structuring of new financial contracts and economic transactions.
  • Assist in the execution of annual business planning and forecasting. Complete analysis, modeling and research to support budgets.
  • Provide support for Board meetings and financial resources for stakeholders. Periodic presentations and updates to stakeholders.
  • Be comfortable with a dynamic industry in which financial metrics will be developed.
  • Develop a financial reporting system that can support the goals of the team while maintaining a strong understanding of first principles.
  • Develop and maintain all necessary accounting policies and systems, including general ledger and financial reporting. Ensure that records are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Coordinating, preparing and reviewing monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Coordinate tax schedules, returns and information.
  • Manage all tax planning and compliance with all required federal, state, local, payroll, property and other applicable taxes.
  • Manage cash flow.
  • Coordinate activities of external auditor.
  • Oversee and enhance the internal accounting team.
  • Other finance and administrative duties as required.

You Are (or You Have)

  • 7-10 years of accounting leadership experience, including experience at a fast-growing company and/or startup
  • 5+ years of Public Accounting experience
  • An excellent communicator with high EQ
  • Detail oriented, organized, and able to balance multiple projects simultaneously
  • Able to “go with the flow” in our fast-paced, quickly growing company and be able to acclimate to the company’s needs as it evolves.
  • A team player with a positive spirit.
  • A patient and adaptable mindset and a desire to forge into the unknown.
