Job Description

It's a Perfect Day to change the world! At Perfect Day, we're doing just that.
Perfect Day was founded in 2014 to create delicious, nutritious dairy products that everyone can love. We’re using fermentation (not animals) to make dairy proteins that are the foundation for foods like ice cream, cheese and yogurt – all with the distinctive taste and textures that consumers demand, but without lactose or environmental downsides. Through partnerships with respected brands, we’re working to launch a whole range of dairy products that will help shape a humane, sustainable food system for future generations.
As the newest member of the Biochemistry Team in Bio-Analytics, you will build and maintain biochemical and biophysical assay support for R&D and manufacturing efforts. The Biochemistry team is a fast-paced and multidiscipline group, and we love solving puzzles. We need motivated, proactive members to establish reliable bioanalytical assays and explore new protein biophysical techniques. A successful candidate will have prior industry experience working in teams and strong protein chemistry knowledge to complement and build upon our current profile of bioanalytical methods to interrogate protein quality/function, structure, activity and more.

YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS:

  • Develop biochemical and biophysical assays to explore the integrity, structure and function of recombinant dairy proteins, including, but not limited to, 96 well plate assays, post-translational modification characterization, FPLC, SDS-PAGE and thermostability techniques.
  • Optimize current assays to reduce waste and increase through-put by incorporating automation where possible and/or building streamlined data analysis pipelines.
  • Carry out routine biochemical and enzymatic assays and analysis while maintaining a high level of experimental standards.
  • Data and statistical analysis, reporting and communicating results to a group of interdisciplinary and curious scientists.
  • Training team members on newly developed assays.
  • Work collaboratively with the R&D and Manufacturing teams.
  • Maintain a high degree of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail in both experimentation and documentation.
  • Preparation and reviewing of process documents for newly developed assays.
  • We value team culture! Work cohesively in a team, being proactive in your work, seeking opportunities to build your understanding and contributing to a gift economy culture.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • BS or Masters in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field.
  • 8 + years’ experience of biochemistry/protein biochemistry related experience.
  • Previous method development experience in protein handling and protein-based biochemical and biophysical assays (UV-Vis, SDS-PAGE, FPLC, DSC, colorimetric assays).
  • Experience in working in high-throughput systems (96 well plate formats).
  • Listens and responds constructively to other team members’ ideas.
  • Expresses disagreement constructively (e.g., by emphasizing points of agreement, suggesting alternatives that may be acceptable to the group).
  • Shares his/her expertise with others.
  • Seeks opportunities to work on teams as a means to develop experience, and knowledge.
  • Works cooperatively with others to produce innovative solutions.
  • Sets specific, measurable goals that are realistic but challenging, with dates for accomplishment with manager.
  • Clarifies expectations about what will be done and how.
  • Enlists manager’s support in obtaining the information, resources, and training needed to accomplish his/her/their work effectively.
  • Promptly notify manager about any problems that affect ability to accomplish planned goals.

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED:

  • Experience with SciNote.
  • Experience with automation, database input, query and extraction.
  • Experience with Python, JMP or other programming language.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position requires the ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods, climb, kneel, bend and consistently lift up to 25 lbs.

It's a Perfect Day to change the world. The day when delicious dairy goodness is something everyone can love. The day we say goodbye to the downsides of factory farming. The day we throw a big party with luscious, animal-free milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream, all made with Perfect Day! We hope you join us!
