Job Description

The Manager, Prototype Engineering be working daily to help guide the engineers in the Prototyping team to effectively execute on the project milestones. This would often be managing projects that serve the Vehicle Engineering, Industrial Design, Product, Sense and Compute hardware, and other teams. Emphasis must be made on the quality of our output and speed of execution. The Prototype Engineering team is composed of mechanical engineers, electrical and integration engineers, and works cross-functionally with vehicle engineers, manufacturing engineers, software engineers, and test engineers. 

Responsibilities

  • Lead Prototype Engineering activities in a cross-functional team environment working on vehicle prototypes, subassemblies, laboratory test arrangements, special projects, and equipment collaborating with all Zoox teams that need to transform their design or idea into a physical prototype
  • Design, build, test, and refine prototypes and equipment to solve autonomous mobility
  • Apply engineering and tolerance techniques to high precision design requirements
  • Manage both internal and external resources to engineer, develop and deliver components and prototypes
  • Manage the prototype project planning, resource allocation, execution, interacting with the internal customers, taking ownership of all prototype engineering activities
  • Provide design directions and design support to team members mentoring and developing a team of high performing engineers

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 10 or more years of relevant industry experience in mechanical engineering and electromechanical integration engineering
  • Experience managing people and/or projects that are beyond the scope of mechanical engineering (electrical, software, etc.)
  • Experienced using CAD tools, SolidWorks, and/or CATIA
  • Direct experience managing in-house and external resources for prototyping and short-run manufacturing
  • Expertise with GD&T, Quality, and measurement tools and processes
  • Experience with industrial material, steels, aluminum, plastics for 3D printing, foams, fiber-reinforced plastics
  • Experience with common prototyping processes, including but not limited to: Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing), CNC machining, Welding, grinding, and fabrication, Thermal treatments and coatings, Fiber reinforced plastic manufacturing

Vaccine Mandate
