<h1>Rover – Mechanical Arm Lead</h1><h1>Description </h1><p>The Queen's Space Engineering Team (QSET) is a large multi-disciplinary team consisting of students from all programs within Queen’s University. QSET designs a prototype Mars Rover for participation in the University Rover Challenge (for more information please visit urc.marssociety.org/home).</p><p>If selected as the Mechanical Arm Lead, you will lead the design of a next generation lightweight manipulator for the rover’s 6 DoF arm with a focus on weight reduction, stiffness, and modular serviceability. The successful applicant will work closely with the Rover CTO and the technical managers to coordinate designs between subsystems as well as delegate tasks to mechanical members. To keep updated with the project, the Mechanical Arm Lead must coordinate and attend weekly meetings with the larger arm system team. If you require accommodations during the interview process, please contact qset@ engsoc.queensu.ca.</p><p><strong>Application Due Date: September 18, 2025 at 10 PM</strong></p><h1>Responsibilities</h1><ul><li>Replace current aluminum links with composite or hybrid structures.</li><li>Conduct kinematic and structural analyses to validate payload capacity.</li><li>Evaluate quick swap end effectors for delivery and servicing tasks.</li><li>Produce fabrication drawings and oversee arm assembly.</li><li>Document maintenance procedures and spare parts lists.</li><li>With the help of the rover management team run weekly arm meetings with general members, working towards furthering the state of the arm.</li></ul><h1>Preferred Qualifications</h1><ul><li>Critical thinking and decision making, with a passion for engineering and design.</li><li>Effective communication and time management skills.</li><li>Interest in robotic arms, gimbals, or similar mechanisms.</li><li>Willingness to learn composite joint design and potting techniques.</li><li>Familiarity with lightweight drive solutions (harmonic, cycloidal, or planetary gears).</li><li>Understanding of the basic principles of mechanical design (failure modes, material selection, design by user requirements, etc.)</li></ul>
