Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. The mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To execute this plan, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skill sets and experience that relate to this role.
The SPARC tokamak will be the first net-energy fusion reactor and a key steppingstone towards CFS’ first commercial fusion powerplant. As of today, the SPARC tokamak has passed conceptual design and ground has been broken on the reactor site. Moving forward, the device requires engineering complex integrated systems at the limits of materials performance and capabilities and will feature a large-scale cryogenic plant and cryo distribution system that will generate and deliver low-temperature gaseous helium to various tokamak subsystems. The cryogenics system is a critical utility for ensuring the tokamak high-temperature superconductors (HTS) meet performance requirements.

This team member will:

  • Serve as CFS technical point-of-contact for the selected cryoplant vendor, providing dedicated technical support, including but not limited to: presenting/clarifying specification(s), identifying and resolving vendor questions, communicating evolving design needs to/from the SPARC team, leading vendor and SPARC team meetings, identifying critical decisions and risks that warrant additional attention, and documenting all interactions
  • Maintain and modify specification(s) as necessary for the design and fabrication of the cryoplant, soliciting feedback from others to ensure the cryoplant meets the requirements of SPARC
  • Perform calculations and develop design deliverables as needed to support proper sizing and operation of the cryoplant during all operating modes and to facilitate integration of the cryoplant with other SPARC systems
  • Lead the technical portion of cryoplant design review meetings. Including but not limited to: developing deliverables and presentations, reviewing and providing feedback on deliverables and presentation sections, presenting sections and answering reviewer questions, providing responses to reviewer comments
  • Support other SPARC cryogenics team priorities as necessary
  • Comply with CFS design control processes, providing high-quality documentation
  • Prioritize effective teamwork, e.g. maintaining a positive mindset, communicating proactively, taking initiative, and providing constructive feedback
  • Manage cryogenic plant involvement of supporting technical consultants and firms

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in the engineering of large-scale, integrated systems
  • Experience managing vendors to deliver large-scale thermofluid systems, from conceptual design through field commissioning;
  • Experience developing requirements, PFDs, P&IDs, and specifications for thermofluid components, e.g. blowers, tanks, control valves

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Developing simple, practical, commercially-viable design solutions
  • Learning new technology quickly, leveraging available resources, getting things done, and making efficient decisions
  • Effectively communicating cross-functionally, especially with those not familiar with cryogenics
  • Hands-on building, installing, and/or operating large-scale cryogenic systems
  • Running analysis and generating drawings using engineering software
  • Working in a fast-paced, dynamic commercialization environment
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, noise
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call

CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. We all tightly align with our company values of integrity, execution, impact and self-critique. As we grow, we are looking to add talented people who are mission driven and bring diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems.
At CFS, we deeply value diversity and are an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally for employment. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law, ordinance, or regulation.
