Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. The mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To execute this plan, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skill sets and experience that relate to this role.
Generating net energy plasmas in the SPARC tokamak will involve a skilled team of physicists and engineers operating various aspects of the tokamak.  The Operations Engineer will coordinate with various engineering teams to develop operational and maintenance plans and procedures for the SPARC tokamak.  In addition, the first period of integrated commissioning of the tokamak and all its subsystems will require careful planning.  The Operations Engineer will be an integral part of the team that generates net fusion energy plasmas on SPARC and prepares CFS to operate a fleet of fusion power plants

This team member will:

  • Develop operational plans and procedures for the various SPARC systems in coordination with engineering teams, ensuring operations compatibility between systems
  • Coordinate planning for integrated commissioning of the SPARC tokamak, working with system owners to develop integrated commissioning procedures
  • Develop maintenance plans and procedures for critical SPARC systems
  • Work closely with physics operators, system owners, and systems engineering to ensure coordinated operational planning
  • Contribute to early planning for operations of a fleet of ARC fusion power plants
  • Lead early engineering operations teams for net fusion energy plasmas on SPARC

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering or science field (e.g., mechanical, industrial, etc.)
  • 3+ years of experience in engineering test, integration, or industrial operations
  • Experience working on the operations of large integrated facilities with many systems, preferably fusion, accelerator, or other scientific facilities
  • General knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and fluid systems
  • Attention to safety
  • Strong interpersonal and technical communication skills
  • Ability to understand technical documentation including mechanical and electrical drawings, testing requirements and specifications

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Experience with vacuum systems
  • Experience with cryogenic systems
  • Experience with power electronics
  • Experience with radiological environments
  • Experience with instrumentation and control systems
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling tools, such as NX or AVEVA
  • Ability to perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to adhere to safety protocols for hazards such as heat, fumes, noise, and strong magnets

CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. We all tightly align with our company values of integrity, execution, impact and self-critique. As we grow, we are looking to add talented people who are mission driven and bring diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems.
At CFS, we deeply value diversity and are an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally for employment. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law, ordinance, or regulation.
