Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. The mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To execute this plan, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skill sets and experience that relate to this role.
CFS’ magnet technology, key to the mission of deploying 10,000 fusion power plants, is also capable of revolutionizing a wide array of applications that rely upon magnetic materials. Examples of these applications include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), wind turbine generators, power electronic equipment, and magnetic levitation trains. This new hire will play a leading role in bringing CFS’ magnet technology, along with its performance benefits, to these applications. This role will be responsible for developing and growing a new magnet business line for CFS.
We are looking for a business leader who can work at all levels of an organization, has experience building very early-stage hardware businesses, and is comfortable working with commercial and technical teams. You are the ideal candidate if you are passionate about starting a new business with a revolutionary technology, can think creatively about business partnerships, and are invigorated navigating all the inevitable challenges of bringing new technology to established businesses.

This team member will:

  • Analyze potential magnet technology applications and corresponding markets for a given sector 
  • Identify potential customers and partners, lead discovery conversations
  • Develop and create presentation materials and assets used to engage with business partners 
  • Develop internal business processes for revenue and partner expense approval, internal deal execution, and after sale service
  • Negotiate appropriate contracts to with customers and partner to accomplish CFS’ revenue goals
  • Build an ongoing market intelligence function within a particular sector
  • Coordinate product development for magnet applications with CFS’ internal technical and administrative teams
  • Manage the team responsible for delivering CFS’ magnet application products in a particular sector, including but not limited to, managing members of other CFS teams, administering product development budgets, and enlisting required outside resources and partners

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • 6+ years of experience in a business development, investing, consulting, or entrepreneurial role 
  • Knowledge of a particular sector, examples include healthcare, social infrastructure, and power infrastructure 
  • Experience with frameworks for market analysis
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and influencing skills
  • Ability to balance strategic vision with detailed execution plans
  • Collaborative mindset and the ability to lead through influence across multi-functional teams
  • High degree of comfort with ambiguity with an ability to navigate uncertainty
  • Experience with financial modeling and various business partnership structures 
  • A mix of technical and business backgrounds is preferred, but not required

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Willingness to travel up to 25%
