At Mill we are striving to build a better environment for all, as we take on climate and kitchen change.</div>As Commercial and Product Counsel, you’ll be an integral part of an innovative company and work alongside a dynamic team and top-tier investors and advisors that are tackling the devastating environmental impact of food waste by creating a new category and a first-of-its-kind product and service. This role will focus on supporting commercial contracting across Mill (including sales, marketing, vendor and supply chain agreements), and advising on product issues (including, consumer protection, privacy, product safety, marketing compliance, environmental). As part of a small start-up legal team, you’ll be nimble enough to also help support corporate, intellectual property, employment issues, and other legal matters, as needed. You should be genuinely interested in working on cutting-edge legal and policy issues at the intersection of technology, behavior change and the environment. You also need to have the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced setting, strong organizational and communication skills, and a desire to rapidly learn and evolve.What you’ll do:<ul><li style="font-weight:400;">Report to the Head of Legal and work on Mill’s commercial and product matters, identify and strategize about risks, and advance Mill’s interests. </li><li style="font-weight:400;">Draft and negotiate a wide variety of agreements and corporate documents, including partnership, business development, and supply agreements. </li><li style="font-weight:400;">Work with the business team to structure commercial relationships and collaborations</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Advise on legal risks related to commercial transactions and contracts.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Lead legal support for product matters, identify and strategize about risks, and advance Mill’s interests.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Provide solution-oriented legal, regulatory, and strategic advice and direction to Engineering, Product, Marketing, Communications, Policy, Business, and Customer Support from the initial stages of project development to launch and beyond.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Ensure compliance with U.S. and international laws and regulations on privacy and data protection, competition, consumer protection, payments, product safety, and intellectual property.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Advise on legal issues and risks related to the Mill kitchen bin and related services, Mill’s marketing materials and promotions, and new product features or service models.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Draft and develop company policies and procedures, including drafting terms of service, disclosures and disclaimers, FAQ’s, privacy/data policies, and other customer-facing legal policies and information.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Drive and manage the development of form agreements, legal and approval processes, workflow process improvements, internal training and guides to scale with the company as it grows.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Build positive relationships across the company and with its external partners.</li></ul>What you’ll need:<ul><li style="font-weight:400;">4+ years of law firm and/or in-house experience, focused on counseling innovative products/services.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">JD from an accredited law school and state bar membership.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Background as part of a start-up legal team or outside counsel to start-up legal teams.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Experience counseling on privacy and data protection, competition, product safety, marketing and intellectual property.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Prior work in environmental compliance/policy, solid waste/food/agriculture industries, and/or consumer hardware products a plus.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Interest in policy work around waste prevention, circular economy, GHG emissions reduction, and sustainable agriculture practices.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Demonstrated business judgment, and the ability to analyze the costs/benefits of proposed resolutions to business and legal issues.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Proven ability to build solid, trusting, and credible relationships, including working closely with engineering, product and business teams.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Excellent writing, communication, and people skills.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Strong desire to push beyond your current legal knowledge and acquire new skills and expertise by tackling unexpected challenges.</li><li style="font-weight:400;">Hungry to learn every aspect of how to build a category-defining company that is working on changing the way we live for the better of our planet.</li></ul>The estimated base salary range for this position is $175k to $215k, which does not include the value of benefits or a potential equity grant. A wide range of factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, market conditions, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and business and organizational needs.
