Then do we have a position for you!  We are seeking an expert, diligent, and strategy-minded Senior Battery Safety & Mechanical Testing Leader to join our rapidly growing team! As we move toward commercialization of our outstanding battery technology, we need to implement not only standard battery tests but develop and complete tests suitable for solid-state batteries. We expect that some of the tests we develop will become standard tests across the renewable energy industry.  The role of Senior Battery Safety & Mechanical Testing Leader (SMTS - Senior Member Technical Staff) will be based in San Jose CA and reports to the Senior Director, Product Engineering within the Cell Engineering & Process Development team.
The Senior Battery Safety & Mechanical Reliability Testing Leader will help QuantumScape achieve success by supporting the development of our commercial cell products by delivering on the following: 

Role & Responsibilities

  • Coordinating and conducting safety and reliability testing at QuantumScape facilities as well as at 3rd party laboratories
  • Developing and conducting tests crafted for QuantumScape’s solid-state batteries
  • Establishing a new Battery Safety Laboratory at QuantumScape’s San Jose, CA pre-pilot plant facility including designing the laboratory, specifying equipment, working with vendors and our procurement team to source the equipment, installing and validating the equipment, and working with our Metrology Teams to establish automated data collection and analysis
  • Hiring, training, and leading a small team of technicians and engineers to conduct these critically meaningful tests
  • Working closely with the QuantumScape cell design engineering team to develop new cell models
  • Supporting the QuantumScape EH&S team in developing safe working procedures for cell production
  • Generalizing test procedures developed for QuantumScape to be applicable across the industry for solid-state battery products, and partnering with various standards organizations such as UL, IEEE, NFPA, and government agencies to encourage adoption of relevant procedures in industry standards

Required Education & Experience

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in electrical, chemical, electrochemical, or mechanical engineering
  • Minimum 5 years of proven experience in test development in an R&D or product development environment
  • Experience conducting and developing safety plans for tests that might result in energetic reactions such as cell thermal runaway

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience with lithium-ion battery Standards/Certification, UN/DOT 38.3, IEC62133, UL1642 and IEEE1725
  • Excellent familiarity with automated test development including specification, procurement and validation
  • Strong communication skills internally and with outside labs
  • Excellent organizational skills and careful attention to detail
  • Proven analytical skills for making independent decisions based on data
  • Good understanding of the fundamentals of battery chemistry
  • Motivation and passion for success
