The company is building a better battery that enables electric vehicles to charge faster, go further, last longer, stay safer and cost less than current electric or gas-powered vehicles. Do you want to make a major contribution to this part of the energy economy? QuantumScape is seeking a highly-motivated Senior Materials Processing Engineer - SMTS on the R&D - Materials Development team to further improve the performance of our novel solid-state battery materials. You will learn how the technology works, develop new materials to be integrated into the device, and contribute to the scaling-up of the processes. This includes helping to craft new materials and production processes to help put our technology on the road. Join us in an amazingly critical role that takes on a variety of interdisciplinary challenges!

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Characterize physical properties of solid-state materials and understand their physical limitations
  • Develop processes for material synthesis that are aligned with the platform goals
  • Demonstrate a scalable and repeatable approach to achieve the performance
  • Define physical and electrochemical specifications for the materials of interest, understand process space that is compatible
  • Qualify and introduce scaled-up processes to our baseline flow
  • Perform data analysis and develop control charts

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or equivalent
  • 5+ years of materials development experience (3 years with MS; 1 year with Ph.D.) with proven experience in a research and development role
  • Proven experience with material synthesis processes (solution-based processing, ball milling)
  • Solid understanding of safe laboratory practices, especially in handling hazardous chemicals
  • Proficiency in JMP and/or Python for data analysis, and process control
  • Exposure to and comfortable with working in a glovebox, dry room, or fume hood

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • PhD degree with relevant industry experience in materials processing
  • Demonstrated success working with process development in the battery industry
  • Hands-on experience in electrochemistry or energy storage-related projects
  • Prior experience with maintaining analytical or process tools
  • Knowledge of statistical process control
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
