Job Description

The Company

Sofar is on a mission to connect the world’s oceans. We design, build, and deploy the largest privately owned network of marine weather sensors to power the world’s best marine weather forecasts. Our data helps our customers to increase efficiency and reduce emissions, delivering tools to governments and other stakeholders to understand impacts of climate change on extreme weather and ocean health. We live on Planet Ocean, and our goal is to create the ocean intelligence needed to ensure a sustainable future.

The Role

Sofar designs, builds and deploys ocean sensing networks at a global scale that provide unique observational knowledge of the state of the ocean surface. Using advanced data assimilation methods, we leverage our data to drive the best global marine weather forecasts over the ocean. We have done this successfully for ocean waves. We are now doing the same for the lower atmosphere to create the most accurate and reliable operational surface wind forecasts. We are looking for an ambitious atmospheric scientist who is passionate about working in a highly collaborative team of scientists and software engineers to create the best marine weather forecasting system over the world’s oceans.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of an atmospheric modeling system to improve representation of surface winds over the ocean
  • Provide an atmospheric-centric perspective on air-sea interactions and their effects on the marine atmospheric boundary layer
  • Implement a customized numerical atmospheric general circulation model on the cloud
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and software engineers to build a world class forecast system leveraging Sofar’s unique global observing system
  • Bring your unique expertise in atmospheric science to complement our ocean science team
  • Coordinate with wave and ocean modelers to implement a coupled modeling interface
  • Coordinate and conduct simulation experiments to tune the atmospheric model to improve forecast skill of coupled atmosphere-wave-ocean dynamics

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of atmospheric science and atmospheric modeling
  • Experience running and tuning numerical atmospheric models such as FV3-GFS, WRF, GEOS AGCM, IFS
  • Experience with high level programming languages such as Python, Fortran, C++
  • Excellent communication skills, and you excel working in a cross-functional team
  • Generally a Ph.D. in atmospheric science or related field, but we will consider highly qualified candidates of any education level with equivalent experience

Bonus Points

  • In depth knowledge of processes involved in air-sea interaction
  • In depth understanding of the marine atmospheric boundary layer
  • Experience with modeling for tropical cyclone prediction
  • Experience coupling atmosphere, wave, and/or ocean model components

Employee Conduct

It is the responsibility of every employee to contribute to a positive work environment through cooperative and professional interactions with co-workers, customers, and vendors.

Equal Employment Opportunity

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran status, disability, or any other factors prohibited by law.
