We are seeking a hands-on manufacturing engineer to join our team developing electric-powered aircraft. You are efficient in the office and on the shop floor, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Your core responsibilities will include design tools, jigs, fixtures, and general assembly aids for production and R&D builds. You will work in a team involving design for manufacturability in a cross-functional role, supporting multiple technologies on the aircraft. The role is mainly focused on Assembly and FAL tools and equipment and requires a variety of skills related to tooling, such as composite production tooling and assembly, sheet metal design, design of injection molded tooling, machined parts, 3D-printed parts, and general material selection. Just as importantly, you will be responsible for drafting, supporting manufacture and build of tooling and equipment to be used in production. Your additional sub-tasks will include part-sourcing, and hands-on assembly of tooling.
You are well organized, with strong written skills, and are able to create and maintain work instructions, in addition to excellent documentation of projects and tasks. You have extensive experience with a wide variety of assembly and manufacturing processes, automation of processes, cost analysis for outsourcing of processes, and paperless workflow systems.

Within 3 months you will

  • Get to know the team
  • Shadow design engineers, technicians, and other manufacturing engineers
  • Support manufacturing related tooling activities, both internal and outsourced
  • Support drafting of standards related to assembly tooling design
  • Learn how to use our CAD and PLM tools

Within 6 months you will

  • Continue learning about the aircraft and subsystem assemblies
  • Take ownership of new manufacturing/tooling projects
  • Work with technicians and design engineers to develop tooling, procedures, quality control points, inspection plans, etc.
  • Purchase and implement new manufacturing equipment along with tooling design to support prototype and production builds
  • Keep equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services

Within 12 months you will

  • Reach high level of familiarity with the aircraft
  • Continuously improve tooling designs and processes
  • Efficiently incorporate design changes into manufacturing plans and tools
  • Improve tools by studying product requirements; researching, designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience designing tooling or manufacturing equipment in a production environment, preferably in a high-volume operation and/or aerospace
  • Tool design for complex assemblies (spring assemblies, electro-mechanical jigs, etc.), drill jigs, scaffoldings, etc.
  • Design for manufacturing and assembly, for both high rate and low rate production 
  • Proficient with CAD software (NX or CATIA preferred), Surface modeling is a plus 
  • Proficient with model based definition, drafting and GD&T standards (ASME Y14.41, Y14.100, Y14.5)
  • Proficient and safe use of hand and shop tools
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams to improve the assembly and FAL process of a product (Design for Manufacturing)
  • Comfortable creating new solutions to problems, working in a dynamic environment, and with members of cross functional teams
  • Ability to communicate implementation of tooling, such as work instructions, tool usage instructions, tooling drawings, safety information, and/or new product integration plan
  • Must be able to easily access our shop in Mountain View, CA, and our final production facility as well as travel to supplier to evaluate tooling manufacture and buy-off

Desired

  • Proficient use of analysis tools such as FEA, CFD, Mass and Volume Evaluation, Thermodynamics; knowledge in seismic requirements is a plus
  • Programming knowledge related to automation of manufacturing processes. Python, PLC, or other similar experiences a plus
  • Metrology/inspection experience with any of the following methods and their related programs: Laser trackers, scanners, NDI equipment such as ultrasound, or thermography
  • Proficient in the fundamentals of industrial engineering, including capacity models, technical writing, time studies, and labor cost forecasting
  • Familiar with OSHA and other government requirement
  • Familiar with HMI requirements and other tooling interfaces
