Manager (Waste Sector Methane Abatement) – Climate Intelligence Program

Program Overview

The Climate Intelligence Program focuses on making emissions visible and translating data into actionable insights and tools for public and private decisionmakers who are best positioned to reduce emissions. We collaborate with a global network of NGOs, academics, policymakers, financial institutions, and businesses to enable emissions reductions in some of the highest emitting industrial sectors. Our work focuses not only on quantifying the risks of climate inaction but also on identifying emerging opportunities to meet 1.5-degree climate targets. Our efforts cut across a variety of fields including oil & gas, waste, and industrial supply chains.

Position Overview 

RMI is looking to hire a Manager to support our Climate Intelligence program and strategically steer our efforts on Methane Decarbonization in the Waste Sector. As a Manager, you are a creative thinker with deep subject matter expertise in waste methane management and will apply a holistic approach to solving challenging problems and accelerating mission critical work. You will manage staff, support senior leadership in building and expanding the waste methane program at RMI, and work closely with colleagues and external partners. You will provide technical/analytic guidance and mentorship to junior colleagues. 

Your key responsibilities as a Manager include:

Drive adoption of market-based solutions

  • Manage relationships, leverage finance and market-based tools, and convene key stakeholders (e.g., industry groups, corporates, and NGOs) to support development of waste sector decarbonization solutions.
  • Develop and execute pilot projects with stakeholder groups to validate methods and technologies for improved methane abatement within the waste sector.
  • Coordinate with technical staff within and outside of RMI to publicize results of pilots and encourage broader adoption with industry groups.
  • Shape project strategies from inception to conclusion—determine change models, research methods, timelines, resource plans, communications plans, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Develop key performance indicators and be accountable for project execution.
  • Rigorously challenge and vet findings from RMI teams and partners.
  • Act as the lead relationship manager with project partners and stakeholders.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance (e.g., marginal abatement cost curve and other techno-economic models) to junior colleagues to create actionable insight.
  • Oversee internal and external teams that range between 2 to 25 contributors.
  • Collaborate with operations team members to ensure adherence to RMI policy and procedure.
  • Lead procurement efforts for projects where necessary.

 

Manage projects to yield breakthrough insights and results

  • Shape project strategies from inception to conclusion—determine change models, research methods, timelines, resource plans, communications plans, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Develop key performance indicators and be accountable for project execution.
  • Rigorously challenge and vet findings from RMI teams and partners.
  • Act as the lead relationship manager with project partners and stakeholders.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance (e.g., marginal abatement cost curve and other techno-economic models) to junior colleagues to create actionable insight.

Thought leadership and fundraising support

  • Collaboratively develop strategies for scaling waste sector decarbonization.
  • Lead and contribute to research efforts and publications.
  • Synthesize findings and insights into clear and compelling presentations, whitepapers, journal articles, and/or reports.
  • Represent RMI publicly at conferences, share expertise in response to media requests, discuss our work with donors, and support RMI research collaborations.
  • Support senior leadership with grant proposals and other business development and fundraising efforts.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree, or equivalent experience, in waste, environment, sustainability, economics, energy, and/or engineering.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of professional experience in fields related to waste sector e.g., landfills, wastewater, organics processing facilities, technology providers, regulatory agencies etc.
  • Expertise and understanding of waste management practices, challenges, and key opportunities for methane mitigation.
  • Prior experience in management.
  • Experience collaborating with external partners with varying perspectives and facilitating challenging conversations.
  • Deep commitment to eliminating methane and other emissions from the waste sector.

Desired Competencies:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and thought leadership skills.
  • Aware of industry news and latest developments regarding methane in the waste sector.

Location  

These positions can remain remote through the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the COVID-19 situation improves, it is preferred that the successful candidates will live near one of RMI’s U.S. locations; New York, NY; Washington, DC, Boulder, CO; Basalt, CO; or Oakland, CA.

Compensation

The starting salary range for a Manager level position is $103,000-$121,000. This role has an additional 10% annual bonus target. Salary will be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
