Job Description

RMI-Senior Designer

RMI is looking to add a talented, innovative, and passionate Senior Designer to our Creative Team, which supports the organization like an in-house design agency. This hire will be skilled in planning, conceptualizing, and executing diverse designs and collateral, working closely with a highly creative design team. The Senior Designer reports to RMI’s Art Director.

In addition to a passion for design, you will have intense curiosity about RMI’s work and a desire to communicate complex / technical topics in compelling ways. You will have six or more years of experience producing produce materials for diverse needs across print and digital and will be versed in translating technical data into informative and engaging visuals. Projects that you can expect to be involved in include websites, digital and printed magazines, presentations, technical reports, graphs, annual reports, event marketing materials, and infographics. It is highly desired for you to have solid knowledge of user-experience design and informational architecture

In this position, you will work closely with members of the Marketing and Communications team as well as diverse staff from across the organization, including Research & Collaboration, Development, and in other functions. You will coordinate the work of outside agencies or contractors when needed. To be successful in this role, you will be a strong communicator with effective facilitation skills—someone comfortable leading internal client meetings and getting the right information to create the best possible product.

Key responsibilities:

 • Lead and execute graphic design projects for a wide range of deliverables (see below) from start to finish:

  • Translate creative brief and communication goals into compelling design solutions
  • Manage timelines for design projects, updating stakeholders on progress as needed
  • Present design solutions, guiding and collaborating with client to achieve the best possible final product
  • Manage production, such as printing and web development process
  • Participate in project debriefs for continuous team improvement
  • Collaborate with marketing managers and other staff to ensure project objectives are met

• Ensure efficient sharing, management, and archiving of design files

• Coordinate the work of freelancers or agencies

• Maintain and update internal image management system and graphics library

• Understand and reinforce RMI’s visual brand standards, including the RMI parent brand and any sub-brands under the guidance of the Creative Director 

Required Skills & Experience:

• Six years of graphic design experience, with five years working in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop) and PowerPoint

• Bachelor’s degree in design

• Proficiency with design principles such as color theory, typography, grid layout, and information hierarchy

• Two years of website design / UI experience, for both desktop and mobile

• A strong portfolio showcasing info graphic design, website design, magazine layout, logo development, HTML e-mails, and photography

• Two years working knowledge of HTML and CSS and how to design for it. Relevant experience with CSS (design, troubleshooting) and Javascript

• Strong photography and photo editing skills

• Adept at leading discussions to align on design needs with clients

• Ability to balance multiple projects, maintaining poise while delivering quality on tight deadlines

• High attention to detail and results-oriented

• Confident presenting creative design concepts, and welcoming of feedback and creative direction

• Strong written and oral communications skills and experience with group-based work

• Strong work ethic, dependable, and responsible

• Knowledge of proofing and prepress is desired

Location:   

The position will remain remote through the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the COVID-19 situation improves, it is expected that this role will be based out of one of our offices in Oakland, CA, Washington, D.C., New York City, Boulder, or Basalt, Colorado. This will be discussed further throughout the interview process.

Compensation: RMI compensates based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. Typically, new Senior Designers based in the U.S. join at the minimum to mid salary range of $70,000- $82,000. You would also have an additional 5% bonus target!
