Job Description

RMI is looking for an innovative, passionate, and hands-on Design Manager to join our Creative Team. This hire will be skilled in the conceptualization and execution of diverse design needs—whether print, digital, or multimedia. As the RMI Design Manager, you will work closely with our Creative Director leading an in-house team in visual projects from start to publication with a focus on delivering well-designed, high-quality pieces.

The Design Manager will be a steward of RMI’s visual brand and help to ensure that deliverables meet RMI’s standards. The position also involves designing and executing new brands, as has been needed in the past for new organizations that RMI has incubated and spun off.

You will also work closely with our internal editorial, media, social, web, and email, and marketing teams. In addition to a passion for design, you will have an intense curiosity about RMI’s work and a desire to communicate complex topics in compelling and attractive ways.

RMI is a fast-growing international NGO working in the climate change mitigation space. Our focus is on transitioning global energy use to sustainable sources in a global, equitable, and affordable matter. Our ideal candidate will have intense curiosity regarding RMI’s work in renewable energy and our techno-economic solutions to counter global warming. You’ll be able to dive into the very technical research and translate that into a compelling story of RMI’s impact for a variety of audiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for elevating and evolving RMI’s brand vision to present and clearly, by concisely articulating vision and strategy behind ideas.
  • Streamline and channel the production of visuals for the publications allowing the Creative Team to concentrate in data visualization and storytelling.
  • Manage content strategy to properly align digital content with the company’s overall.
  • Presents and articulates concepts in a clear and focused way that drives productive discussion, and compels work forward
  • Work directly with other creatives and cross-functional teams to concept, develop, and present new brand partner ideas and programs.
  • Maintain, curate, and regularly upgrade RMI’s stylebook, as well as monitor the use of the company’s style in all its products and content.
  • Actively guide, and mentor to ensure your team members perform at their peak and grow professionally. Lead and inspire teams to continually raise the creative bar and stay curious.
  • Come well versed and with a passion for researching market developments and industry trends to identify potential partnership opportunities.
  • Create ideas that can become scalable executions in the future. Be able to adapt with the business as it evolves over time.
  • Maintain and provide ongoing design of the website, promos and ad banners, seasonal content updates, special promotion materials, etc.
  • Effectively visualize information and complex data (graphs, data visualizations, and PPT graphics).
  • Maintain and effectively utilize a network of freelancers and vendors to meet the company production needs.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 5+ years of Creative experience in art direction, including graphic design.
  • Extensive experience in leading and supervising creatives.
  • Expert Adobe Creative user and other design production tools.
  • Proficient HTML, CSS and hand’s-on experience in the creation of web pages and interactive visual content.
  • Knowledge of design principles related to branding, marketing, and publishing with understanding of UX design, information hierarchy and user-flow.
  • Ability to work simultaneously in multiple projects, consistently delivering high quality visuals in tight deadlines.
  • An impeccable attention to detail and a sensibility for current design, typography, graphics, photography and graphics applied to storytelling.
  • A versatile portfolio of work displaying a highly impactful creative work.
  •  Associate degree in Graphic design, website design, computer technology or related area preferred or commensurate work experience.

Location 

This position will remain remote until it is safe to return to one of our offices in New York City, Washington D.C., Oakland, CA, Basalt or Boulder, CO. This will be discussed further throughout the interview process.  

Compensation 

RMI compensates based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. Typically, new Marketing and Communications Managers based in the U.S. join at the minimum to mid-salary range of $79,000- $93,000. You would also have an additional 10% bonus target!
