Job Description

Position Overview  

RMI decarbonizes energy systems through rapid, market-based change in the world’s most critical geographies to align with a 1.5°C future and address the climate crisis. We work with businesses, policymakers, communities and other organizations to identify and scale energy system interventions that will cut greenhouse gas emissions at least 50% by 2030.

RMI is a knowledge-based organization, and it is critical for there to be a successful and robust knowledge management competency at the organization to improve the impact of our programs. RMI is seeking an experienced Director of Knowledge Management with exceptional organizational and communication skills. In this role, you will guide and support the evolution of our Knowledge Management (KM) function. You will also work closely with key stakeholders across all levels of the organization. You will be on the Program Services Team and report directly to the Senior Director of Program Services. You will manage the Knowledge Management Analyst and Research and Data Analytics Team.

This is a new position which represents expanded core competencies and focus at RMI. You will need to navigate RMI’s structure and systems and continue to establish KM as a core practice area. A successful candidate will be a self-starter who commands a robust understanding of Knowledge Management and experience applying them at non-profit organizations.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Drive internal insights vision and strategy
  • Define and drive the strategy, processes, content and technology relating to Knowledge Management (KM) within the organization, which will have a direct impact on program effectiveness  
  • Refine and finalize the KM strategy to ensure alignment with the firm’s strategic objectives
  • Set strategic priorities and execute against the strategic roadmap in partnership with the team and other stakeholders
  • Own and support the build-out of applicable policies
  • Work with stakeholders to define and implement appropriate tools for KM within RMI
  • Innovate new ways to make knowledge available across RMI, connect people to problems, and provide our body of work in an easily searchable format at your fingertips.
  • Oversight and optimization of enterprise level subscriptions, research and data sharing, and RMI libraries
  • Develop and execute a method of content curation across RMI to ensure programs have access to key data, lessons learned, understand what work is being done across the organization
  • Collaboratively work across the institute, especially with the Learning and Development Team as well as the Monitoring and Evaluation Team

Team oversight

  • Provide outstanding leadership and motivation to the team while driving accountability
  • Oversee the Knowledge Management function and team members, including the newly formed Research and Data Analytics team
  • Continue to build out the KM function in the central team and across the organization

Knowledge management champion

  • Ensure and support key RMI internal knowledge is curated and shared across the company
  • Build out and ensure enterprise research and data is shared across programmatic teams
  • Operationalize an organization-wide Knowledge Management framework
  • Act as a champion for KM across the organization
  • Identify partners within the organization to help champion KM
  • Ensure that KM is firmly embedded in business processes
  • Work closely with RMI program teams to integrate knowledge management practices into day-to-day work
  • Provide continuous support and coaching to program teams and operations partners on knowledge management activities
  • Create and partner with IT on document retention planning and policy

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • At least 7 years of direct relevant experience
  • Experience in strategic planning and performance measurement
  • Experience in Knowledge Management Strategy, implementation, and oversight
  • Proven ability to provide leadership, mentorship and build an internal culture 
  • Able to sustain focus on key priorities in a demanding environment of growth and change, while being responsive and nimble when needed and appropriate. 
  • Can thrive in ambiguous situations and operate effectively, even when the way forward is not clear 
  • Must exhibit superb verbal and written communication skills with a high degree of comfort interpreting results and communicating insights effectively 
  • Good judgment and strong decision-making ability
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively, in writing and verbally, with senior staff
  • Experience managing a knowledge management program in an Office 365/SharePoint/Teams environment.
  • Proven ability to create innovative solutions for knowledge management problems.

Additional Qualifications  

  • Passion for the mission of RMI 
  • Prior experience in the field of energy and/or climate change
  • Strong team and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently 
  • Ability to perform duties in a collaborative, unstructured working environment, strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills, strong analytical and quantitative skills, and strong problem-solving skills required
  • International and cross-cultural experience highly desired 
  • Extreme attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work
  • Demonstrated capability to present to audiences in a variety of cultural and institutional settings
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and training colleagues with limited experience of knowledge management

Location     

The position will remain remote through the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the COVID-19 situation improves, it would be preferred, but not required, for this role to be based near one of our U.S. offices in Oakland, CA, Washington, D.C., New York City, Boulder, or Basalt, Colorado. This will be discussed further throughout the interview process.

Compensation   

RMI compensates based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. Typically, new Directors join at the minimum to mid salary range of $134,000- $157,000. You would also have an additional 20% bonus target!
