Research Associate I, High Throughput Screening

We’re using fermentation (not animals) to make dairy proteins that are the foundation for foods like ice cream, cheese and yogurt – all with the distinctive taste and textures that consumers demand, but without lactose or environmental downsides. Through partnerships with respected brands, we’re working to launch a whole range of dairy products that will help shape a humane, sustainable food system for future generations. 
As the newest member of the High Throughput Screening Team, you will support our strain screening pipeline. You will cultivate filamentous fungi in deep well plate format and quantify our target proteins. The High Throughput Screening Team is a fast-paced and multidisciplinary team, and we need a motivated, proactive, and reliable RAI to perform small-scale cultivations and identify new production strains. You will also perform biochemical assays to quantify our target molecules.
As RAI, you will meticulously follow SOPs and execute given tasks independently. Your focus will be performing small-scale cultivations and protein quantification in a high-throughput fashion. An ideal candidate is well organized and keeps detailed notes. You will report results to internal stakeholders. This work will enable our efforts in identifying strains with increased key performance indicators. If you enjoy a mixture of microbial and biochemical work and playing a supporting role in a collaborative team, this is the position for you! A successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in microbiology or related field and have at least 1 year of work experience in industrial settings. 

YOUR CONTRIBUTION:

• Essential functions
• Perform deep well plate cultivations (planning, inoculation, harvest).
• Quantify target molecule using SDS-PAGE and plate reader based high throughput assays. 
• Support laboratory management.
Other functions
• Audit and modify SOPs as needed. 
• Report results in a timely fashion and communicating results to a group of interdisciplinary and curious scientists.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

• BS in microbiology, biochemistry, or related field.
• 1+ years industry/related experience.   
• Candidate must possess a high level of technical aptitude, excellent communication, organization, and collaborative skills, and demonstrated ability to thrive in a dynamic cross-functional team environment. 
• Maintain a high degree of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail in laboratory techniques and documentation.

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED:

• Preferred experience working with filamentous fungi.
• Experience with SDS-PAGE or protein quantification is desirable.
• Familiarity with JMP or other statistics software is ideal.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus, with or without corrective lenses.
• Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods at a given time; reach, climb, kneel, bend, push and/or pull, and at times lift objects as heavy as 25 lbs.
