Job Description

Pachama is a mission-driven company looking to restore nature to help address climate change. Pachama brings the latest technology in remote sensing and AI to the world of forest carbon in order to enable forest conservation and restoration to scale. Pachama’s core technology harnesses satellite imaging with artificial intelligence to measure carbon captured in forests. Through the Pachama marketplace, responsible companies and individuals can connect with carbon credits from projects that are protecting and restoring forests worldwide.We are backed by mission-aligned investors including Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Amazon Climate Fund, Chris Sacca, Saltwater Ventures, and Paul Graham.
Pachama is looking for our 1st in-house legal counsel, reporting to the Head of Finance. In this role, you will partner with leaders across the company to provide end-to-end legal counsel, focusing on commercial contracts. You will also manage all day-to-day legal operations, including corporate securities, IP, privacy, labor, and tax, working closely with outside counsel as needed. The ideal candidate has a demonstrated interest in climate tech, and a track record of success in unstructured, startup environments.
This role is remote within the United States. However, being within 3 hours of Pacific time is preferred for this role given cross-functional communication responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and negotiate commercial contracts with Fortune 500 companies, project developers, and landowners globally, independently managing deal-related escalations as necessary
  • Draft and maintain Pachama’s agreements and templates
  • Review product offerings and business initiatives to spot legal issues and advise business partners on a variety of laws, regulations, and industry best practices
  • Be the main point of contact for all legal matters at the company, supporting the leadership team and appropriately managing risk
  • Build the foundations of legal operations, including scalable processes and software
  • Engage with regulators and provide thought leadership and strategic direction on the rapidly growing carbon markets
  • Hire, manage, and mentor future members of a world-class legal team

We are looking for

  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school, along with active membership in at least one state bar
  • 7+ years of legal practice and 3+ years of in-house experience; startup or high-growth company experience is preferred
  • A successful track record of managing strategic partner negotiations and contract drafting from start to finish, understanding the balance of moving fast while protecting the company from key risks
  • Sound and practical business judgment and ability to manage multiple, high priority, competing priorities
  • Extraordinary interpersonal and communication skills, phenomenal ability to communicate information effectively internally and externally, including to non-legal audiences, and to drive cross-functional alignment and action collaboratively
  • Curiosity and love for learning about legal issues across multiple jurisdictions, in a rapidly growing industry
  • Absolute passion for our mission and a belief that we can make an impact to solve climate change
  • Knowledge or experience with carbon markets (nice to have)
  • Fluent in Spanish or Portuguese (nice to have)
