Job Description

We're Cruise, a self-driving service designed for the cities we love.

We’re building the world’s most advanced, self-driving vehicles to safely connect people to the places, things, and experiences they care about. We believe self-driving vehicles will help save lives, reshape cities, give back time in transit, and restore freedom of movement for many.

Cruisers have the opportunity to grow and develop while learning from leaders at the forefront of their fields. With a culture of internal mobility, there's an opportunity to thrive in a variety of disciplines. This is a place for dreamers and doers to succeed.

If you are looking to play a part in making a positive impact in the world by advancing the revolutionary work of self-driving cars, join us.

Our AV Behavioral Diagnosis Team does the first technical analysis of all AV behavioral issues on the road. They are responsible for translating anecdotal reports or high-level metrics into something useful by Engineering and Technical Product Managers. This requires a broad knowledge of the entire system and the technical depth to contribute to engineering.

We are looking for someone who knows how to lead this highly effective team and help them to deliver on this mission. Someone who is just as comfortable talking about the planning robotic subsystem as they are with how the metrics are calculated.

At Cruise, we believe in managers who remain deeply technical and understand the challenges their teams are facing. Our managers mentor their teams to success, shield their teams from distractions, and help publicly celebrate wins.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Own on-road regression investigations and response while collaborating with Data Science, Operations, Engineering and other cross-functional teams
  • Own on-road safety critical issue, triage and mitigation in conjunction with Ops and our Safety Org
  • Effectively drive engineering by distilling sophisticated analysis into practical and useful reports
  • Scale and expand analysis coverage and quality with automation, tooling, engineering partnerships and offshoring resources
  • Build systems to continuously improve the skills and AV knowledge of the team
  • Align priorities with many cross-functional internal customers (TPMs, Engineering, Legal, Data Science, Data Analytics, Ground Truth and Executive Leadership)
  • Effectively present data-driven analysis to executive leadership
  • Conduct performance evaluations, identify top performers, and support their growth into technical leadership or engineering management roles
  • Foster a healthy, collaborative culture and high-output team
  • Help define, build, and embody Cruise engineering culture and principles
  • Work closely with recruiting for external engagements

What you must have:

  • 4+ years of demonstrated ability to manage and lead teams who have shipped and supported scalable production systems
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Engineering or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience performing risk assessment and issue prioritization of sophisticated systems
  • Experience defining process automation and scaling strategies and driving its execution.
  • Self-motivated to lead your teams, encourage standard methodologies, and continuously improve.
  • Effective interpersonal, leadership, and concise communication
  • Mix of hands-on skills and management experience in critically important product development environments
  • Strong multi-functional communication, collaboration and stakeholder management
  • Ability to learn quickly, starting with little information and quickly becoming an expert in your domain

Bonus Points!

  • Experience building test plans and test cases
  • Experience hiring teams from the ground up.
  • Experience with Python, SQL or reading C++
  • Experience root causing robotics failures
  • Strong analytical background and able to drive data-driven decisions
