Job Description

We're Cruise, a self-driving service designed for the cities we love.

We’re building the world’s most advanced, self-driving vehicles to safely connect people to the places, things, and experiences they care about. We believe self-driving vehicles will help save lives, reshape cities, give back time in transit, and restore freedom of movement for many.

Cruisers have the opportunity to grow and develop while learning from leaders at the forefront of their fields. With a culture of internal mobility, there's an opportunity to thrive in a variety of disciplines. This is a place for dreamers and doers to succeed.

If you are looking to play a part in making a positive impact in the world by advancing the revolutionary work of self-driving cars, join us.

We’re looking for a documentary filmmaker to help bring the Cruise brand to life. As part of Cruise’s in-house creative team, you will work with a talented group of creatives and marketers to evolve and grow the Cruise brand through brilliant ideas, compelling content, and inspired storytelling across multiple channels.

Our ideal candidate is a documentary filmmaker at heart, eager to capture milestones in automotive history that are really just an ordinary day at Cruise. You are equal parts cinematographer and editor, plus can adeptly wear a producer and director hat. You would own projects from start to finish, acquire domain-expertise in the product and user, be driven by a curiosity to learn more, be comfortable navigating ambiguity, and would carve out compelling narratives. After completing discovery and strategic work, you’d move into executional mode: producing, directing, cinematography, and editing, with the support of crew and resources to plus your work.

This role reports to the Sr. Manager, Video Production and sits on the Creative team. You’d work closely with our Creative and Comms teams. We’re in the process of building out edit bays and a small studio at our SF office. We all wear a lot of hats at Cruise and are passionate about the self-driving future.

A requirement of this role is that this team member is strategically positioned close to or within San Francisco and is available to be onsite multiple times a week as needed - to be essentially “on call” to fast follow engineering gate approvals, timelines, and opportunistic storytelling moments. Cruise is happy to assist with relocation.

While the frequency of travel may increase over time, San Francisco’s 7x7 is currently Cruise’s primary operating area, so the majority of filming will take place in San Francisco in the near-term.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Delivering top-notch storytelling film and video campaigns that drives business, brand and the autonomous vehicle industry as a whole
  • Bringing a point-of-view to your work and owning the filmmaking process from start to finish
  • Digesting briefs and pitching treatments, leading discovery work across business units, fleshing out story and aligning with stakeholders
  • Wearing your producer hat, lining up what is needed both internally and externally to pull off awesome shoots
  • Capturing stunning cinematography of self-driving vehicles, and the people and processes behind the technology
  • Rigging autonomous vehicles with cameras and livestream systems to capture content inside moving vehicles
  • Crafting tight, engaging edits for multiple channels and audiences
  • Managing weekly smaller editing asks, such as software demos, cut-downs, alternate aspect ratios, sizzle reels, and subtitles
  • Maintaining awareness of social trends and industry leading creative work, and always seeking to uplevel your own work

What you must have:

  • Strategically based in or near San Francisco to be essentially “on call” to fast follow engineering gate approvals, timelines, and opportunistic storytelling moments
  • Technically proficient in camera systems, lighting, audio, and editing software
  • 6+ years of experience as a cinematographer/camera operator
  • 6+ years of experience as an editor
  • A portfolio that shows strong strategic and conceptual campaign thinking applied across a range of deliverables
  • Experience crafting films and videos that breathe humanity into technology in a way that is both simple and accurate
  • Ability to work autonomously (no pun intended) to deliver on-brand, on-brief films and videos with little oversight
  • A strong understanding of different content channels and an ability to adapt how we shoot to fit the audience and the medium
  • Both comfort and confidence in a self-driven, fluid environment
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills

Bonus Points!

  • Award-winning documentaries or branded content
  • Livestream experience
  • Startup in-house experience
  • Sheet metal cinematography or photography portfolio
  • Experience translating AI and complex engineering concepts into simple speak
  • Auto, airline, ridehail, or robotics brand experience
