The Senior Manager of Systems Engineering under Autonomy Performance, a group within the Robotics Department is responsible for strengthening and further developing and executing on our program to define, measure and continuously improve the autonomous performance of our AV SW, in support of all AV development activities. We are also responsible for executing on high quality analysis, requirements, testing coverage to develop and maintain proof that the AV System meets safety, regulatory, and product needs. This group ensures that the AV behavior is measured accurately and completely (metrics development and validation); that business, safety, and legal functions are fully defined and tested (functional requirement & test coverage); and that performance is adequately measured, simulated, and correlated to behavior on-road.

This role requires an energetic and motivated individual with strong communication, organization, and technical skills who works well in a fast-paced dynamic environment. The successful candidate will be an experienced leader with a passion for autonomous vehicles, have a deep knowledge of data-driven products and help direct the future of the team through outstanding hires, lead modern engineering teams using peer reviews, agile methodologies and test driven development. They will continuously explore opportunities for improvement and automation, and help scale the team for future expansions in capabilities and volume.

The Senior Manager of Engineering will lead the direction of the team, mentor engineers, systems engineers and test engineers and support their career development, and help drive design decisions.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Improve the software performance metrics and requirements for improving the behavioral performance of our AV software
  • Improve engineering productivity through testing strategy and execution, automation and enabling processes, and collaboration and coordination with Simulation and Productivity Infrastructure teams
  • Ensure that our autonomy performance is defined, measured and continuously improving
  • Oversee resources, staffing, and designs of multiple engineering teams
  • Manage day to day execution to deliver robust solutions
  • Work with Technical Product Managers and Senior Engineering Managers to develop and execute project roadmaps
  • Ensure performance metrics comply with best industry standards and practices
  • Maintain an effective governance and continually improve governance to meet engineering and validation needs
  • Work with Cruise Safety and Functional validation teams on testing and requirements verification
  • Determine applicable standards to improve autonomy performance and provide guidance and oversight to ensure ongoing adherence
  • Communicate significant risks that may impact performance or reliability in a timely manner to Management
  • Continually establish and improve performance systems, initiatives, priorities and timelines.
  • Establish strong working relationships with engineering teams, testing infrastructure teams, data infrastructure and data science teams for a sense of shared accountability
  • Foster a collaborative culture of testing, safety, and documentation
  • Strengthening the data and information capabilities of the organization and championing a data-driven environment
  • Increase the productivity of the team by identifying process gaps, common pain points and scalability issues and develop a plan to address them

  • Recognizes where there is a need for new teams or job functions across their organization and efficiently coordinate with leadership and other orgs to execute on filling the gaps
  • Has 10+ years relevant industry experience, with 5+ years in managerial or technical leadership role
  • Has managed and built teams of testers and engineers with diverse backgrounds and experiences, including in a production environment
  • Has managed full department budget including headcount, operations and infrastructure
  • Has experience with agile development processes, test driven development and a zeal for automation at all levels
  • Has effective planning, able to consistently and accurately plan releases both at a high and granular level
  • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills with the finesse to engage engineers, executives and board members

Bonus Points!

  • Has prior experience as a software developer (preferably C++)
  • Familiarity with automotive or aerospace (or similar) safety critical systems and testing
  • Experience with autonomous vehicles or robot path planning
  • Familiarity with state and parameter estimation methods
