About the role:

Privacy Engineering’s mission is to make Cruise the model for AV consumer privacy. We do so through privacy preserving products and services built on top of robust privacy enhancing infrastructure, policy, and clear communications.

We are seeking a Software Engineer to help build out our privacy stack. In this role, you will collaborate on maturing/expanding the scope of our data discovery tooling, identify risks associated with data mapped, propose/execute on mitigations for risks identified, and contribute to our next generation of privacy infrastructure.

This is first and foremost an engineering role for an individual with solid, practical, and modern software engineering experience. This role is a great fit for someone who has had some exposure to security and privacy, and is looking to make the transition into the privacy field full-time.

You should be comfortable in uncharted territory as we build unique privacy technologies and grow user trust. We need your skills and passion to make it happen. This role is eligible for remote work.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Collaborating with Cruise’s Senior Privacy Engineer on maturing/expanding the scope for Cruise’s data discovery and data mapping tool.
  • Developing and maintaining features across current-generation and next-generation Privacy infrastructure
  • Participating in team’s planning, code reviews, and design discussions leading to continuous improvements in these areas.
  • Creating, deploying, and analyzing our infrastructure through infrastructure-as-code tools, (e.g., Terraform).
  • Investigating potential risks identified via data discovery/mapping tool, working independently to sample data, explore risks technically, engage data owners, and propose a path forward for managing the risk.

What you must have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a quantitative field or equivalent practical experience. At least 2 years working experience in a related field.
  • You are excited about data governance and to be on the cutting edge of data & privacy problems.
  • You possess fundamental security knowledge, being able to threat modeling and architect for security.
  • You have built performant, maintainable, scalable, and testable backend APIs using Python.
  • You have the ability to roll up your sleeves and work throughout the privacy engineering stack, from frontend to infrastructure.
  • You've operated and have an understanding of cloud infrastructure platforms, (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • You have significant experience with relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL) and an understanding of modern data warehousing (BigQuery et al).
  • You have perseverance and negotiation skills with a track record of achieving good user outcomes.
  • You have the ability to communicate and collaborate across subject areas (e.g. engineering, legal, policy).
  • You have the ability to work in a growing organization while keeping focused on key goals and priorities.

Bonus Points!

  • Familiarity with privacy laws, regulations, standards, and best practices such as CCPA, GDPR, and ISO 27701.
  • Background in statistics, especially for risk modeling.
  • Experience with technical approaches to managing privacy risk.
