About the role: 

As a Staff Software engineer (in Cruise’s Machine Learning Accelerator’s (MLA) Compute Platform team), you will be responsible for leading the design and development of reliable and high-performance runtime software for Cruise’s next generation custom silicon / SoC ML accelerator. Your designs will form the basis of the software development kit (SDK) needed to provide AV engineers with access to both current and future compute platforms through clean, light-weight, high-performance and portable APIs, abstractions, runtime middleware layers and frameworks. As Cruise expands our vehicle offerings on our path to productization, your accelerator runtime design will not only enable Cruise’s low cost custom silicon critical to our long term business needs, but also provide the needed platform portability to ensure our successful scaling.

Responsibilities:

• Architect,  design and develop runtime software functions across multiple layers of abstraction (kernel/OS, middleware, application) for Cruise’s own custom ML SoC as well as cloud datacenter GPUs
• Collaborate closely with our compilers and libraries teams to ensure clean interfaces are maintained
• Own the performance of accelerator runtime and scheduling layers (both on and off vehicle)
• Work with cross-functional teams (silicon team, embedded systems and application developers) to ensure system level functionality works seamlessly
• Review code submissions, provide feedback and guidance on coding, breaking down tasks for junior developers, tracking execution and efficiently reporting status
• Create long term strategy and roadmaps for runtime development 
• Create and implement technology standards, methodologies, processes, and guidelines
• Manage relationships with multiple vendors
• Coach and mentor team members on engineering excellence projects 

Qualifications:

• Hands-on coding experience (C++ and Python)
• Strong background in software architecture and design patterns
• Experience developing accelerator runtimes and scheduler middleware layers
• Experience tech leading a small team 
• Solid background in designing high-performance runtime software for heterogeneous systems with compute accelerators (e.g. GPUs or DSPs)
• Knowledge of OS/driver internals and software stacks, as well as compiler technology
• Strong communication, influence, and negotiation skills
• Exceptional leadership skills and ability to set direction and work through ambiguities
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
• Minimum 5+ years of relevant industry experience or equivalent experience

• MS or PhD in CS, or related technical field or equivalent experience 
• Familiarity with embedded SoC GPU, MLA software stacks
• Experience developing software in pre-silicon emulation environments
• Experience with profiling and performance analysis of software designs
• Experience with AI and ML applications and inference software stack
• Experience with real-time operating systems and software applications
• Experience building complete software developer kits (SDKs) for accelerators (ie. GPU)
• Experience with building SoC/IP performance models 
• Experience with designing software applications for safety critical systems
