We’re looking for a Staff Engineer on our Vehicle Controls team to deliver mission-critical autonomous driving features from concept to production. The Vehicle Controls team realizes the desired trajectory for our autonomous vehicles using sophisticated trajectory following methods that optimize for dynamic feasibility, safety, and comfort. We collaborate with many teams from Motion Planning to Systems Engineering to ensure our functionality and system architecture are robust, fault tolerant, and provide best possible performance to smoothly and accurately execute the planned trajectories on multiple host vehicles.

As a Staff Engineer on the team you’ll be working with stakeholders from other teams to create roadmaps, drive alignment on architectures and functionality, lead breakdown into individual projects and guide implementation and roll-out. Besides your focus on robustness and performance of our functionality you’ll be expected to identify opportunities for simplification, and to design for scalability. Your intimate familiarity with our team’s code base combined with your care for code quality and proactiveness in reviewing other team member’s PRs will make you a role model and  leader in the field of development quality and experience.

What you’ll be doing:

• Taking on complex engineering problems related to algorithms and architecture  from conception to implementation and deployment touching aspects from motion control performance to robustness and safety.
• Designing, implementing, and tuning readable, testable, and scalable algorithms and functionality in C++ within our software stack.
• Analyzing performance from simulation and real-world testing (on public roads and closed-course test tracks), root causing issues, and identifying as well as prioritizing areas for improvement.
• Creating and improving test frameworks and visualization tools to aid understanding of algorithm performance and increase developer speed.
• Contributing to planning with ideas, roadmaps, and through prioritization with team and group leadership.
• Serve as a resource to other developers for SW development speed and quality through PR reviews.

What you must have:

• Several years of AV-industry experience in controls,  motion planning, or a related field.
• Expertise in dynamic systems and controls.
• Expertise  in C++ with a flair for code quality incl. unit testing.
