Job Description

We're Cruise, a self-driving service designed for the cities we love.

We’re building the world’s most advanced, self-driving vehicles to safely connect people to the places, things, and experiences they care about. We believe self-driving vehicles will help save lives, reshape cities, give back time in transit, and restore freedom of movement for many.

Cruisers have the opportunity to grow and develop while learning from leaders at the forefront of their fields. With a culture of internal mobility, there's an opportunity to thrive in a variety of disciplines. This is a place for dreamers and doers to succeed.

If you are looking to play a part in making a positive impact in the world by advancing the revolutionary work of self-driving cars, join us.

This team is responsible for the Autonomous Vehicle (AV) level validation strategy and plan. The scope covers all programs and vehicle platforms. The ownership and execution of system integration and system test for the AV are distributed throughout the organization, and this team formulates requirements and interfaces to ensure that the overall activity is logical and coherent.

As the TLM or Manager of this team, you are expected to staff, lead, grow and develop a team of engineers who will work working backwards from a milestone and associated safety targets, and establish the overall strategy and validation plan. This is formulated as a structured set of analyses, simulations, metrics and tests which will be the technical criteria to assess the readiness to launch the system in the target environment.

In addition, you are expected to play a direct and strong role as a technology leader: inventing solutions, defining technical strategies and validation methods that accelerate development and scale with the complexity of the driving environment. You will make strategic decisions and guide the engineering execution on key initiatives.

What you'll be doing:

    • Hire, mentor, and motivate an outstanding team of engineers responsible for defining clear test campaigns, identifying gaps, proposing solutions, and specifying the requirements for validation methods, tools and test environments
    • Collaborate with other teams to define a comprehensive integration and verification campaign with consistent interfaces. This includes system integration and V&V for the major subsystems such as the Host Vehicle, the AV System, and the Passenger Experience system; and verification activities in the HIL to test interface performance as well as fault injection to verify the functional safety mechanisms (fault detection and system response)
    • Participate in the development of safety and AV behavior related topline metrics.
    • Define an approach to establish that the system is sufficiently robust to internal faults, errors and performance limitations; and partner with the functional teams who are responsible for the details of fault modeling, fault injection, sensitivity analysis, and framework development
    • Define a strategy that balances simulation, closed course testing and real-world driving, and planning vehicle closed course testing, including clear criteria to define test cases
    • Collaborate with Simulation to mirror performance in closed course tests and use simulated test cases to enable AV performance

    What you must have:

    • Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, or PhD in an engineering discipline such as Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Robotics or related field
    • Ability to lead with multi-functional communication and collaboration skills
    • 2+ years of experience as a hiring manager, recruiting and retaining the best talent
    • 10+ years experience in systems engineering including system verification and validation
    • Experience in test traceability from system level to component level
    • Experience with verification and validation activities and system test planning, from test cases / procedure development to test execution, and developing test environments and frameworks
    • Experience driving and influencing as an advocate for safety across all levels of hardware and software development
    • Hands-on experience with mechanical, electrical, and software component integration, ability to troubleshoot complex issues during system integration process
    • Proven track record of successes, e.g. having successfully managed the validation of a system or product to ensure safety

    Bonus points!

    • Direct experience in autonomous vehicle industry on system level testing
    • Experience with fast-growth companies and recruiting/retaining the best talent
