Our team also works on some other safety features within the Driver, for instance reduced operation following hardware failuresAbout the Role As a TLM for Autonomy on the ML collision avoidance team, you will lead a team of talented software engineers, guiding technical direction and fostering their growth. You will be responsible for both the technical vision and execution of critical AI components within our safety-critical backup autonomy stack.About the Work You will be responsible for leading and contributing to several of the following areas:<ul><li>Lead and mentor a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and building a highly motivated team.</li><li>Define technical roadmap and strategy for AI components within the backup system, ensuring alignment with overall product and safety goals.</li><li>Oversee the design, development, and deployment of machine learning models for general obstacle detection and motion prediction, using multiple sensors, with a focus on simple but effective representations for reliable performance.</li><li>Guide the team in data mining and analysis to predict future conflicts and to make principled decisions on initiating emergency maneuvers.</li><li>Collaborate with controls and behavior teams to ensure seamless integration and handoffs to and from emergency mode for safe and physically achievable emergency maneuvers.</li><li>Work closely with operations and systems teams to prove that collision prevention meets consumer vehicle standards, including designing and overseeing testing methodologies.</li><li>Lead large-scale simulated testing to identify unintended risks of the backup system, and accurately measure differentiation in the failure modes of the primary and backup systems.</li><li>Direct the implementation and testing of short-term fallback driving modes for the primary Nuro Driver, including fine-tuning or modifications of our "foundational" perception and behavior models.</li></ul>Manage project timelines, resources, and deliverables, ensuring high-quality and timely execution.About You <ul><li>BS/MS in Computer Science, Robotics, Statistics, Physics, Math or another quantitative area.</li><li>Experience:</li><ul><li>4+ years of industry engineering experience, with a significant focus on AI, robotics, autonomous systems, or ADAS.</li><li>2+ years of experience in a technical leadership or management role, leading software engineering teams.</li><li>2+ years of dedicated expertise in machine learning.</li><li>Strong proficiency in C++ and Python.</li><li>Proven ability to lead cross-functional technical projects from design to completion.</li></ul><li>Bonus points for experience in any of these:</li><ul><li>Experience managing teams focused on 3D geometry and state estimation fundamentals.</li><li>Leadership experience in lidar, camera, or radar-based ML, and sensor fusion..</li><li>Background in traditional robotic planning with kinematic constraints.</li><li>Experience validating robotic systems with simulation and statistical metrics, including defining metrics and test strategies.</li><li>Deep understanding of ADAS concepts like TTC, PRT, and standards like FMVSS127.</li></ul></ul>At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $235,030 and $352,290 for the level at which this job has been scoped. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply.
