This includes diagnosing malfunctions, preventative maintenance, repair, and overhaul of various types of transit equipment in the maintenance shop and in the field. The Mechanic Apprentice program is governed by the Standards of Apprenticeship adopted by the Community Transit/IAM Apprenticeship Committee. <h2>Essential Duties</h2>Job Duties<li>Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical defects in hybrid and diesel- powered buses and other heavy motorized mechanical equipment</li><li>Operate and maintain electronic diagnostic and related equipment, including computer programs and scanning tools.</li><li>Diagnose, dismantle, repair, and overhaul all types of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines, automatic transmissions, differentials, hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic systems.  Operation of vehicles is required.</li><li>Perform wheel alignments, adjust and repair brakes, pumps, starters, injectors, lights, steering gears, generators and air conditioning systems.</li><li>Install, maintain and repair a variety of auxiliary systems, equipment and electronics including fare collection, communication and related components.</li><li>Operate hydraulic lifts, hoists, jacks, cranes, diagnostic computers and software.</li><li>Document work done, material used and how time is spent on appropriate forms.</li><li>Perform general cleaning work in the garage and other related work as required.</li><li>Assist in chaining vehicles.</li><h2>Requirements</h2>Minimum Qualifications<ul> <li>High school graduate or GED</li> <li>One year of experience in mechanical repair work on automotive or diesel equipment is preferred. Any combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.</li> <li>Must pass the Mechanical Aptitude test with an 80% or greater test score.</li> <li>Possession of a starter set of tools and rolling tool box at time of hire .</li> <li>Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire, a Class B Washington State Commercial Driver’s license with passenger and air-brake endorsements.</li> <li>Must be able to work any shift assigned to meet the needs of the agency, including nights, weekends, and holidays.</li> <li>Community Transit has a drug and alcohol-free workplace policy.
