Our platform leverages large language models (LLMs) and building science to detect HVAC system faults early, improve efficiency, and empower facility operators with interpretable insights.Our mission is to translate groundbreaking research into scalable, real-world solutions that save energy and cut costs across diverse building portfolios.Role:We are seeking a Founding AI Engineer who combines deep expertise in applied machine learning/LLMs with a practical understanding of building science and HVAC systems.This is both a hands-on and strategic leadership role: you will design and fine-tune LLMs for HVAC fault detection, oversee data engineering pipelines, and guide the roadmap for scaling AI-based fault diagnostics into commercial deployment.You will work closely with the internal team to ensure models are accurate, interpretable, and robust across varied building systems.Responsibilities: <ul><li>Own the technical roadmap for developing and deploying LLM-based HVAC fault detection systems.</li><li>Replicate and extend state-of-the-art research (e.g., fine-tuning GPT models with HVAC fault datasets) into production-ready tools.</li><li>Design and optimize data pipelines for HVAC operational data, including preprocessing, labeling, self-correction strategies, and augmentation.</li><li>Fine-tune and benchmark LLMs (using LoRA, SMOTE, or other parameter-efficient methods) against existing FDD (fault detection &amp; diagnostics) tools.</li><li>Work directly with building engineers and facilities teams to validate outputs and ensure interpretability.</li><li>Lead efforts to generalize fault detection across sensor configurations and diverse building types (AHUs, VAVs, chillers, etc.).</li><li>Mentor junior engineers and collaborate cross-functionally with product and operations.</li><li>Provide thought leadership in applying AI to energy efficiency and fault detection.</li></ul>Qualifications:Must-Have:<ul><li>4+ years of applied ML/AI experience, with at least 2+ years in LLM fine-tuning or domain adaptation.</li><li>Proven track record of leading end-to-end ML projects, from research to deployment.</li><li>Strong Python programming skills with experience in ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face).</li><li>Familiarity with time-series/sensor data and building system datasets.</li><li>Ability to communicate across disciplines (data science, building engineering, operations).</li></ul>Preferred/Bonus:<ul><li>Practical knowledge of HVAC operations and building science (e.g., AHUs, dampers, coils, control strategies).</li></ul><ul><li>Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS) and BAS data integration.</li><li>Background in energy modeling, commissioning, or building operations.</li><li>Prior experience scaling ML systems in production environments.</li><li>Strong leadership skills: mentoring, roadmap ownership, and cross-functional collaboration.</li></ul>What We Offer:<ul><li>Impact at scale: Your work will directly reduce energy waste in commercial buildings, cutting costs and emissions.</li><li>Leadership opportunity: Shape the AI strategy for a fast-growing climate tech company.</li><li>Decision-making opportunity to hire and manage engineers.</li><li>Competitive compensation + equity.</li><li>Flexible work environment (remote-friendly with periodic in-person collaboration).</li><li>A mission-driven team committed to innovation in the built environment.</li></ul>
