Software Engineer

We make software that manages energy resources in homes and businesses—including things like smart thermostats, electric vehicles, solar panels, storage batteries, heat pumps, and even people’s behavior—to generate, shift, or save energy to balance the grid, making it more efficient and reliable. This creates clean energy capacity that can be used by the power grid instead of burning more fossil fuels. Our solutions accelerate the transition to clean energy and save money for energy customers.</span></div><div><span>&nbsp;</span></div><div><span>As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll design, build and maintain backend systems that manage fleets of distributed energy resources in different energy markets around the world. You'll collaborate closely with product managers, energy market participants like electric utilities, and your peers in Uplight Engineering to provide reliable and predictable dispatching and monitoring of a wide array of energy resources.</span></div><div><span>&nbsp;</span></div><div><span>How You Will Make an Impact:</span></div><div><span>You will be part of a team focused on modeling energy resources and providing the rest of the organization with data about them, and flexible ways to dispatch them. The systems you'll own will make it easy for utility control rooms to get exactly the load shed or shift they are looking for. These systems will also be a source of truth for other engineering teams to build features on top of.</span></div><div><span>&nbsp;</span></div><div><span>What You Get to Do:</span></div><div><span>&nbsp;</span></div><ul><li><span>Lead the design and development of backend systems that orchestrate fleets of distributed energy resources (DERs).</span></li><li><span>Manage structured data—including usage metrics, account information, and device metadata—within relational databases.</span></li><li><span>Apply domain logic to support eligibility, customer workflows, and operational decision-making.</span></li><li><span>Develop and maintain robust APIs and event streams that enable customers and partner engineering teams to build DER-based applications.</span></li><li><span>Collaborate with product and operations teams to translate program logic and business requirements into scalable software solutions.</span></li><li><span>Write clean, efficient, and testable code following best practices in software engineering.</span></li><li><span>Participate in code reviews, contribute to system architecture discussions, and drive continuous improvement in backend design.</span></li></ul><ul><li><span>&nbsp;</span></li></ul><div><span>What You Bring to Uplight</span></div><ul><li><span>5+ years of experience building backend systems in production environments.</span></li><li><span>Strong expertise in Python and Ruby, Rails and MySQL</span><span>, with attention to correctness and maintainability</span><span>.</span></li><li><span>Familiarity with Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure, containerization, and CI/CD best practices.</span></li><li><span>Excellent communication skills and the ability to simplify and implement complex domain logic.</span></li><li><span>Passion for clean energy, decarbonization, load shifting, or helping customers engage in grid programs is a strong bonus.</span></li></ul><div><span>Bonus Points:</span></div><ul><li><span>Experience with real-time or streaming data systems (e.g., Kafka, Structured Streaming).</span></li><li><span>Prior work in the utility or energy sector.</span></li><li><span>Exposure to infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines.</span></li></ul><div><span>Don’t meet every single requirement?
