Job Description

Running Tide is an ocean technology company built to tackle humanity's most urgent challenge: climate change. We build cutting-edge solutions that integrate engineered and biological systems to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, restore ecosystems, and secure food systems. Our multidisciplinary team of world-class scientists, engineers, and maritime operators is working as fast as possible while the world is burning.
We’re looking for a Computational Geneticist to work with our Genetics Team within the Research Department. This strategic role will work with others to help analyze NGS data and develop foundational ‘omics’ level resources such as genomes and transcriptomes.

You Will:

  • Develop and implement state-of-the-art bioinformatics pipelines to analyze next generation sequencing data, including whole transcriptome RNA-seq, whole genome sequencing, whole exome sequencing, etc in various macroalgae species
  • Strategize and collaborate with other team members to assemble genomic and transcriptomic resources to lay the foundation for trait discovery science
  • Explore various internal ‘-omic’ datasets to generate new questions and new experiments
  • Generate new as well as improve macroalgae genome annotations and facilitate the acquisition and incorporation of functional, genetic, and other genome-anchored data from public and private data repositories.
  • Interpret and present the results of computational analyses to collaborators and coworkers
  • Provide substantial input on the direction of macroalgae sequencing strategies and experimental design to help drive discovery science in macroalgae forward
  • Perform requested custom analyses to ensure that project goals are met within specified timelines
  • Stay current on emerging NGS platforms and applications, along with associated data types and analysis paradigms
  • Drive intellectual property strategies, commercialization, and patents for the Genetics Team
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of project data and other materials as needed
  • Mentor, train, and transfer new methods to others.

You Have (or You Are):

  • PhD in Molecular and/or Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Genetic Engineering, Molecular Biology, Plant Biology, Plant Breeding or a related field with an excellent track record of productivity
  • 4+ years of bioinformatics or closely related field with experience in multiple ‘-omics’ data domains.
  • Well versed with cloud-based data processing and analysis (e.g., AWS or GCP)
  • A history of generating and working with ‘-omics’ datasets from non-model plant systems
  • An independent thinker who is willing to challenge conventional ideas and the status quo, if they feel it is necessary.
  • Able to perform under tight timelines and with the agility to change course as needed
  • Future-oriented, innovating mindset with demonstrated record of developing or implementing new ideas and technologies within a company or academic lab environment
  • Strong ability to multitask and prioritize
  • Collaborative and willing to engage with, and contribute to company-wide discussions on research and development tracks, experimental designs, and strategic planning for overall company direction
  • Always willing to learn a new skill / how to use a new technology

Software/Skill Set:

  • Fluent in python and/or R, as well as the use of cloud computing platforms (AWS, GCP)
  • Experience with Git
  • Experience with GPU clusters, and ability to manage and customize cloud-based computing environments

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with plants data, particularly non-model organisms
  • Experience with macroalgae data
  • Experience population genomic analyses and phylogenies
  • Working knowledge of machine learning techniques

Employee Experience:
